So I'm doing some research into my onboard air compressor.

I want electrical, cause its easier to make electricity go, than a buggered motor. So the Kilby/York method is out.

I'm looking at the Viair brand of compressors. And I can't find who sells them in Canada.

Has anyone else gone electrical, and if so, what compressor did you use?

Cheers

I put a $400 viair in the YJ  with a air tank

It works ok but u need a reserve tank. Not the fastest thing.

it could not replace a fast york compressor

I have been trying to figure out how to put a York on my Jeep and keep the AC. However after seeing someone with a CO2 setup I think thats the way I'm going to go for my next rig.

He had two tanks, one that powered the ARBs and one for airing up tires. They were mounted next to each other and could be backups for each other if one went dry.

CO2 tanks are charged quite high and need regulators to use them but once the initial cost is spent its pretty cheap to get them refilled. Also I'm guessing you could open the regualators up to their highest setting and reseat beads with it.

Might be an option to consider before buying a Vivair. Sounds like it needs a tank anyway....

I have A/C and a york. Im sure you could do it on a XJ unless its that different then a TJ.

It is different. The engine compartment of an XJ is way more cramped than a TJ. To do it the battery needs to be moved, to do that the airbox has to be ditched and the intake changed over to an open element system. Completly doable but a lot of work fabbing brackets and reloacting stuff.

I had a York OBA system on my previous 4X4 and was great, I could run air tools with it. But after seeing the simplicity of a CO2 system I'll be going that route.

Another adavantage of the CO2 system is its portable, so if a buddy needs air but you cann't get your Jeep close enough you just pull the bottle out and carry it over there.

Viair 450C 100% duty cycle with a 4-5 gallon tank for now. Does the job well and a continuous supply of air is always a plus as opposed to maybe running out some day. Good customer service and parts are easy to get. I bought it used with a blown ring from being dunked and run without a filter. Honed the cylinder and put in a new rotating assembly and it's like brand new.

Same cylinder in both pics with new rotating assembly as they sent it.

Old man put a York out of an old Volvo on the old CJ and it blows any other compressor off the map. The volume on that thing was amazing, but yeah you have to fab. some stuff.

National sells Viair.

I prefer the 66% or 33% duty, whatever it is. It doesnt take long enough to do tires to push the cycle, and they are noticably faster then the 100% units.

Yeah but airing up 12 other tires on top of my own might.

Denise has done her jeep, mikes, and ricks, all in one shot.

33 x 1350's 5lbs-20
33 x 1350's 8lbs-20
35 x 1450's 12lbs-20

And thats almost an hour by the way.

No issues. Thats the most its done. I've filled more then one jeep pretty much every run out with it.

Now they all have air, but hers is still the fastest because of the duty cycle.

If I had three friends that constantly wanted me to air their tires, I'd be telling them to get their own in a hurry

Now now the VP of the club can't be doing that lol. It's not that bad. Gives us time to recap the days carnage anyways.

Haha Yeah but 110+ in the shade is a bit warm at times. I've just started carrying 5 gal of water in my truck per day trip.
