Drive Train whine/noise

hey guys, since a couple of mud runs i have a whine in the drive train, seems to happen in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears, and seems to start after 1500RPM, i have changed my tranny fluid and the T/C fliud thinking they may have been contaminated and that it may help, however it's still there, any suggestions? could it be clutch related? is a clutch covered under drivetrain warrenty?

Hey Shalil,
I also have a whine from under the hood, my whine is constant from idle on up.  I used to think it was the idler pulley but now I think it is my alternator.  I took my idler pulley off and checked it, it was OK.  The output from the alternator is good but I think the whining is coming from it.  My whine has been around for a month or two and I think it was those evil mud holes where mud gets sprayed everywhere by the fan.  The consensus is MUD IS EVIL.  It was good wheelin' with you when you guys came down to Cowtown.

ya, you hit the nail ont he head Tom, mud sure is evil, my noise seems to be coming from the tranny / T/C area, it's totally gone when i'm off the throttle or in neutral, it's only under torque.... and the clutch still seems to engage and disengage fine.... my problem was the next day out at waiporous, we hit some crazy mud and water holes there....my jeep was past the head lights once or twice, lucky no one tried to follow....-

If fluid (or some sort) got inside the bellhousing on the tranny, check to see if your whine is present when the clutch is engaged/disengaged.

If the clutch is engaged (no foot on the pedal) then its likely your pilot bearing. But I'm no expert, I'm just regurgitating what happened on my old YJ.

I have whine from my Rubi too, my idler pulley needs grease and/or bearings, and my alternator is whining too. Plus my front driveshaft has sparrows, they are not angry yet, but they make their presence known.
Plus my starter solenoid is going too. I turn my key and the electrical system comes up, but the starter doesnt engage. This is very sporadic.


Darn mud always getting into everything. Methinks I'm gonna go get an uber-detail job interior+exterior+underbody+enginebay and then grease the pickles out of everything, and try to seal a bunch of stuff too (hopefully I don't seal something that should breathe).

whats involved in changing the pilot bearing?

Is it the original? Problem with them sometimes is they need a little grease on the end of them and dont get it. That can cause them to get noisey fast.

Work involved is dropping the tranny and pulling the clutch assembly. Make sure if you do it you look into how to re center the clutch properly. Either need a pilot tool, or an old input shaft to make things right. Unless you done tons of em and have a good eye.

Drivers side, that black cylinder looking unit sticking out of your bellhousing.

2 13mil(close to that) bolts and its out. Pretty self explanitory when you go to re install. You'll see what I mean.

Stuff a hose in there and wash until clear water flows out the bottom of your bellhousing. Pressure washer be the best.

Then it's not the pilot bearing ..

No matter what gear it's in, or whether it's in neutral, if the clutch pedal is out the pilot bearing is not doing anything. The pilot bearing only keeps the shaft supported during de-clutched conditions (pedal down) .. so the noise would only be there if you were changing gear .. or waiting at lights with it in gear.

Sounds more like gearbox or rear axle whine .. determine if it's speed related and on/off load related .. something along the lines of "it whines at 80 with my foot on the gas .. but gets less as I ease off" .. that kinda thing.

well thats exactly it, except it's anything above 70-80km/h

i just washed the bell housing out so i'm gonna take it for a quick spin so we'll see if it made any diff...

Then it's drivetrain speed related .. I'd bet it's the diff .. on or off load.

It is not the clutch .. all these components spin at engine speed (unless the pedal is down).

So, it always happends at 80+k?

 - If you sit at a light, and push, unpush your clutch (not in gear), does the noise stop,start?
- If you are at a standstill, and you rev the engine, does the whine come back?
These two are useful for determining whether its drive train (up to tranny), belts, pumps, etc.

Start moving, and it could be tire whine, diff noise, t-case noise.
maybe strap a buddy under the jeep and hit 80k, and have him figure out where it is!  :lol:

well just got back from my drive, it's sure is prominant in 4th gear at 70km/h, it's only there under load, and the sound is totally gone when i'm off the throttle but still in gear, it starts again at any hint of throttle input.

at a stand still there is no sound at all regardless of the clutch being in ot out, and again, it seems to be coming from the mid of the jeep, not the rear axle, thats why i'm thinking tranny or t/c.
i have an appointment at crosstown jeep on monday, but am pretty sure they gonna look at it and say no way are we going to warrenty anything with the amount of mods it's got....
