If someone is selling 3" leaf springs does that mean it will add 3 inches lift? Also, would said leaf springs from an XJ fit on a comanche and give the 3" lift even though it is spring under axle?

Yes when someone posts 3" leaf springs that is 3" lift.  Now about the XJ leafs into a MJ, not necessarily because it all depends on the MJs original spring arch.  XJs are pretty flat from the factory.  I would say you might end up with a slightly lift 1-1.5" but not 3"

The MJ  main spring is longer than the XJ main spring.    The easy solution is to get a custom leaf pack built by a spring company.  As mentioned above the "mix and match" will not result in 3" of lift.

MJs springs go under the axle where as XJs go on top of the axle, which is why MJ spings have more arch. For an easy 5-6" of lift on the back of an MJ simply cut off the spring perches and re-weld them on top of the axle(spring over).

And as said the main leaf on a MJ is longer than on an XJ.

I went into standens to see if they could make some custom springs but the most they said they could do would be about 1.5" lift. If I do a spring over, it'll cost way more than I can afford right now because of all the extra parts to make it work right without vibrations and messing everything up. Plus I already have all the parts for a 3" lift in the front and the rear of the kit really did nothing for me

A lot of kits I've looked at just have shocks and an add-a-leaf in the back. How would the add-a-leaf give 3 inches?

Go to Standons and get the a new leaf pack arced up 1.5 '' than insert the 3'' add-a-leaf which will result in close to 3" of lift.  If you add a 3" add-a-leaf to a set of tired old springs they will very quickly settle down to "very little" lift.
