Charging issues.....voltage regulator....
« on: August 17, 2005, 07:36:43 PM »
Hey!

Got a '94 YJ, 2.5 L of raw power, and my voltage is fluctuating all over the place sometimes it reads in the middle of the guage 13-14 volts which should be normal, but other times it just slowly peters out and drops to 11 or so volts.
Got my alt. tested and they said it was good, battery is new, so I'm speculating that it could be the voltage regulator.

Which is integrated into the ECU (fantastic!)

Has anyone bypassed the ECU regulator and installed an aux. one?

I asked at teh local parts store, but they don't have any imagination, just kept on steering me towards a reman ECU....

Thx!

Mike

The only real way to check this is to put a handheld voltmeter across the battery.
Read it engine off .. start engine and see where it is .. has it increased, or did it rise and return to same position ?? .. both are acceptable.
Now put on lights .. it should not be lower than either of the other two conditions.

I've done that test, (when my jeeps volt meter was reading right) and it's passed fine.

it's just that it fluctuates, sometimes it drops waaaaay down (on the highway no less) (and I haven't had my handheld voltmeter to double check in these instances)

was just lookin' to see if anyone has bypassed the ECU and installed an external regulater....
