what is it?
« on: August 21, 2007, 12:01:41 AM »
So I bought a new project last week, and it's getting delivered later this week.  However, not quite sure what it is, except that it's an early Willys, probably the first 20 years.

Feel free to read through.  If you think you have a better guess than an early 50's, let me know.  There's no plates and no serial number apparent yet, it's pretty dirty.

Well, I won't kid you guys...she's in pretty rough shape, the poor old girl.

However, hopefully some luvin in the garage will eventually fix that. Hopefully I will find some stamp that will give me some more info on her.

dunl another topic we didnt cover on our last outting , welcome to the flattie club ,  my '57 was about the 800th built with the new 12v system , willys also updated the guage cluster to a single speedo that included gas/temp guage , in the pictures you've got the 6v early style 5 guage cluster so your in the 52-56 year range ...

this cdn site is the authority on the 3B

**important** - I learned the hard way these oldies have a single brake res so if you spring a leak    = no brakes ... I drifted through a 4way and all I could do is wave ...

I've done a few things to mine since digging it out of an old guys garage, its pretty original ( pronounced:  every hose and seal is rotten and  leaking ) ... it drives nice though ...

Randy, your's looks a lot better shape than mine currently is.

Thanks for the tip on the brakes...may need to do an upgrade on that, although it'd be nice to think that everyone at a 4way would be in too much shock and awe at seeing a flattie, that I could just roll through.

We're hoping that's the original cluster.  :)

Well, looks like it's probably the original cluster.  Like someone on the earlycj5 site stated, the CJ3B's had the "tub lines".

Had to ask what they were, but they're evident on mine.

Quote
it's 4 3/4" piece added between the kick panel and the cowl area so the cowl is the same heigth as the hood.

So the line that runs parallel to the ground across the side of the hood, extends past the hood to the dash along the cowl.  If you look at mine, you'll see it.

Getting closer to confirming it is an early 50's CJ3B with an original dash. :)

the 3B page website is back up ... yeah

they have a whole section on how you might (with some luck) identify your year if they punched the VIN into the frame - found on (as early as ) '54 and newer 3B's so I think you have a 50/50 chance ... though some had to sandblast to see it ... if its there then you know ... if its not then the odd's are its a 52/53 ...

the original eng # could have also been used ...

let us know if your on with the pto levers or by chance you did end up with an overdrive ... druel!!
