VW Jetta TDI's start around $1500 for early 90's models. Even oldies get 1000km/tank. Though head gaskets tend to go on the older models.

I'd shoot for a late 90's TDI, should come in good with budget and should get a good 5 years out of it.

x2 on Clays subaru.

Jetta's have one of the worst electrical reps in the industry, and high milage diesle jetta's are bad money pits.

I'd hate to get into an accident while driving a Mercedes Smart car.

On the other hand, I'd hate to be anyone hit by me driving one of my German tanks like the pictures I posted.  :shock:

How about a late 90's BMW 328i?  Terrific engine, handling, brakes and build quality.  Get the 5 speed and the M sports package.

My Dad had one but it was a bit older. i just remember that it cost a small fortune when anything broke.
