Jeep Turbo KIT
« on: November 16, 2007, 11:04:53 PM »
Hey everybody,

My name is Jonathan and I own a performance shop in BC.  I have started to develop a turbo kit for our 4.0L engine.  I have trying to search around the local sites to find interest in such kits.

505performance is the only other company that builds them.

The kits will be ready by spring.  I will be creating two different kits.  One with a smaller turbo for quick spooling boost for highway jeeps and a second with a larger turbo for high spools to allow for rock crawling without being in boost.

I have no kit costs, I'm just interested in finding people that are interested in anything like this!!

If you have any questions about Turbos and or how these kits would work ... feel free to ask and comment.

Thanx for reading ..

We just did an SRT-4  now putting down 400WHP ... fun stuff

The lag is needed for offroading purposes .... so there is no spikes will driving on trails and rocks ... then when you hit the mud and you want that extra boost ...

had some time to think about this and now im not sure a boosted jeep would work so well

1.  assuming this kit comes complete with intercooler,,,how well would it work at crawl speed,,no air flow other than from the fan  ,would become heatsoaked in no time and be useless...not to mention when its full of mud

2.  how much hp can a stock 4.0 handle?
my car has beefed up internals and oil sprayers on the pistons to keep things cool

3.you have to run 91.octaine fuel   because now its a high compresion motor

4.   big turbo  = bad idea   in some instaces too much power all at once is goin to be a problem  ,and if you are luging a boosted engine  at low rpm  and get on it hard  you will over boost   and thats never good

but  it would be nice to pass on the hyway without planing it a half hour in advace

not trying to hurt your sales or anything   this is all IMO   and maybe this stuff has all been thought out already

Interest is directly related to cost. If it cann't be done for under $3000 I don't think many would be into it. Chev 350s can be done for less. Personally I wouldn't be interested in anything over $2000. But then for 99% of the trail riding I do the stock 4.0 puts out enough torque for me. Some more on the highway might be nice but I only drive it to the trail and on the trail. Someone who DDs theirs might be more interested.

Good questions.

1.  Only the big turbo kit would have an intercooler.  The smaller turbo would only be running about 4-5PSI which wont need one. For smaller turbo'd jeeps, the power you would get at 5PSI is about an extra 90HP at full boost.   Its not going to be like ripping the steering wheel out of your hand.    The bigger turbo'd intercooler is an water cooled intercooler that sits on top of the engine .. so there is no need for air flow and no way for it fill full of mud ... and if you did .. yo uwould have alot more problems then that :-)

2.  Kenne Bell tested a supercharger kit to 400WHP and didnt hurt the engine.  The bottom ends on 4.0L are strong.  Having the extra two main caps on the crank help out alot.   505Performace kit at 5PSI on there tubo setup gives you an extra 44% power at 2600 RPM!  The only reason for the bigger turbo is not more power but having a higher spool time (IE bigger A/R)

3. Yes .. you will have to run 91 ...an extra 6 bucks a tank :-) But there is very little gas millage difference as long as you stay out of boost :-)

4. As stated before ... big turbo doesnt mean more horsepower.  It is meant to increase spool time so that you can trail it easier.  Its not really a "bigger" turbo, it just has a higher A/R  ( bigger exshaust side)

5.For the bigger turbo kit for my jeep, Im putting in an Electronic boost controler so I can have a 5PSI tune for the trails and Im hoping for a 2800-3000RPM at full boost and then a 10PSI tune for the highway.  With the electronic boost controller you can set what PSI you want in what gear .. .so you dont get 10PSI in 1st :-)

Just a note .. I also have a rubicon so it will take a bit more then stock but I will probably get rid of the weak t-case.

It will be around 3000. Pending on options...I would say ... The 350 idea is fine .. but nobody with an 04 Rubicon is going to rip out there 4.0L and put a 350 .. you just asking for the value to go down ... but thats my option.   you can put a hemi in it .. but that will cost you 10,000.

I mean, Im all about V8's but I love boost just as much  :-)

funny you should mention turbo's. we just received our turbo kit from 505 performance. its going on a 2005ish tj. so far it looks pretty easy to install. its my first turbo kit on a tj. i have installed an avenger supercharger on a 2006 tj allready. im interested to see which installs better and has better performance. the avenger supercharger wasn't that big a deal in performance gain. so i hope the turbo does better. the kit looks very complete and the instructions look straight forward... so far;) i should be installing it starting on tuesday. ill keep you posted on the good and the bad.
so far... the avenger supercharger had, an intercooler, upgraded injectors, and the supercharger, no computer upgrade. banks complete exhaust system, factory air intake with snorkel were allready on the jeep.
the 505performance turbo has, Garret T3/T4 hybrid turbo, intercooler, boost gauge, k&n air filter, larger injectors, add-on fuel pump, add-on computer, proper spark plugs. the jeep will have larger throttle body, banks header, borla exhaust.
more to come...

on 4L blocks, anyone know the scoop on whats refered to as the 'metric' or 'mexican metric' blocks ,  they have this high perf "jeep speed" thing happening in the US and I was reading about some builds and there are negative strength comments on one block vs. the other ...

You really need to read this thread. After you go through it all, I'd definately recommend you give Corey a call.

Great guy to talk to, and he really knows his turbo stuff.

No likely as you stated already but anything made to fit the 4.0L should bolt onto the 2.5L because the 4.0L was based on the 2.5L.  The turbo would probably just have to be tweaked to match the 2.5L.
