New to the Game

Hay everyone. I have finally got a Cherokee. What a search but Im very happy with this one, to a point. I am going to be lifting it and trail running it. And I need to keep up with you guys. I want to become a member but due to my work schedule I can not make it to the meetings. So I will be going to the projects. (Side note: can someone let me know when the next project comes up), I am going with a Rubicon Express 4.5 Super flex. With a set of 31s. I’m looking for a good place to get the lift; any suggestions. I want a place that has good prices and service. Also I am looking for tiers. I have talked to some people about going with an all terrain or going with a Mud terrain. I am thinking I will be going with BFG’s of ether. You guys know the trails so what tiers should I, be going with.

If you are looking for tires, often you can get a set of used 31” for sale on the forum for less money.

I have two Truxus  31” on rims that are in very good condition for sale.

I agree... the new BFG M/T looks killer... they look like a small Krawler  :twisted: . I don't know how the new pattern works in AB's terrain...

Try also Dick Cepek's Mud Country... I have a few buddies that use them and they are pleased so far. National sell them...usually they are a good bang for your buck.

Go see Chase at National... he's usually pretty good with his prices. Check your prices and try to deal him down ... it might get a better price... They are usually pretty good but you never know  :roll: .

Okay, I'm going to give my 2 cents worth...

I have been doing this for a long time. I have purchaced many lifts, and tires and what have you. In the beginning, I dealt with Modern Motors, because they where the only game in town...then along came National. Their prices where cheaper for sure, and they seemed to be able to get whatever you wanted.

The problem was, you had to wait for a bit to get the product. This, to me, WAS understandable as they were a new buisness just getting started. I delt with National quite a few times, and they got a quite a bit of my money.

The problem here is that over the few years that they have been open, the sevice has gotten worse, staff has changed and you still have to wait for the product...I'm talking weeks, even months! (just ask a former member that now drives a Kia how long he has been waiting on tires) I was quoted $20 bucks less per tire than Modern, but I had to wait 6 to 8 weeks for them. I went to Modern and had them in 2 days. As the old saying goes, you get what you pay for.

The other problem I have is, everytime I call there for a qoute...I get a different price. When you order something, you're not told you have to pay shipping on top of that. Why the hell am I paying to have a product shipped from the manufacturer to Burlington Ont. and then from Burlington to Calgary? This was a big farce with their website prices, until they changed it.

I have since switched back to dealing with Modern Motors. Everytime I walk in the door, I'm greeted with a " Hey Smurf...what's the new build today?" Rather than..."uh, can I help you sir?"

Dealing with modern has been a great experience for me these last few months. When I called for a quote on getting my rear main seal done, they were half the price Canadian Tire quoted me. Parts were in stock, and if they wern't, I had them within 2 days.

Drew, Rob, Joe, Ken, and everyone there have been great to deal with. I'm glad that Drew took over the business. He is very personable, and is always out front to greet his customers.

I'm not saying that I will never deal with National again, but they definately need to make some serious changes.

To answer your question about lift and tire combo's...here's what I did.

- RE 4.5" Superflex kit
- 31" Dick Cepek Fun Country II's

The reason I went with the FC II's was that, realisticly, my Jeep sees waaayyy more pavement that off road. The FC II's and an agressive AT tires that have great on road manners. Great in the snow, good in mud, good on ice....and they have very deep lugs.

You have to be realistic and ask yourself how much pavement your Jeep will see. MT's get expensive to replace all the time.

As for the RE lift, make sure that the kit come with the 3.5" rear leafs and not the 4.5" ones. Mine came with the 4.5" rear springs and it sat way too high in the rear. So I took the shackles out and and it still sat high in the rear so I added a 1 in spacer to the front. now it sits level.

Get some nice shock too, OME would be best.

The Dick Cepek Fun Country II is a great tire for the road and dry terrain....

They suck in the mud... even just a little mud.

I run them on my XJ and I use them during the week to go to work and back and on easy dry trails. I have other tires for the trail...

If you are looking for something a bit more agressive than the FC II ... ask Rookie or Toyman about their Mud Country. I think they like them...

Once you spend enough money at a shop they start to get to know you and will serve you better. I've heard both stories about both shops.

Personally I've  found National more willing to wheel and deal. When I bought my IROKS the cheapeast place I found was North Shore Offroad, www.NSOR.com Call them though as they are bad a returning e-mails.

I checked the prices at both Modern and National and National was cheaper by about $40/tire than Modern. I challenged both to meet NSOR's price but only National stepped up(NSOR was about $20/tire cheaper than National's price). So I bought them from National. The catch was I had to wait 6 weeks for the next shiment. Wasn't a big deal to me at the time as the rig had yet to be built. Now this was 3 years ago, both shops have changed people since then sooo....

Check both! and NSOR as well. Then go from there. BTW NSOR would have charged me only $50 to ship a set of four 36" tires. So don't discount them because of the shipping factor.

Also Modern and National don't always carry the same stuff so I you want a particular kit you maybe stuck with one or the other. Or even ordering from a US vendor might work out with the dollar being so strong. Bnine does regualr trips to the US and can bring things back for you.


For a qood dual purpose tire I recommond the Truxus MTs. My dad has a set of 33s and I wheel with quite a few people who have them and all of them are very happy with them.

Thanks for the info guys. There is a new place in Red Deere, Altitude Adjustments. The owner Eric used to own another shop in Red Deere and sold it or closed it and started this one. I called him and when I said I was looking for a RE lift he got so exited on the phone that I thought that something was wrong. His prices where good and he called me back later in the day to say that the prices went down. I am gust wondering if anyone has delt with this guy. First impressions are one thing but lasting impressions are another.

What shop did he used to work at? Could be Eric from Rocky Mountian (formerly of Modern motors). If so, he's a good guy.
