Distributor question
« on: December 05, 2007, 10:53:10 PM »
I'm putting a 4.3ltrchev TBI system complete on my 90 YJ 4.2. I have everything done but the distributor, and have encountered a problem and question. I was told the distributors would swap like the old HEI units if you change the gear with the older v8 AMC.

Heres the question, there is about 4 inches different in lenght to the hold down with the original 4.2 distibutor having the shaft (Oil pump drive) exposed and on the chev distributor resessed in the gear. Even with the gear change how do I fix the four inch difference.

Do I need a different distributor?

Please help this confused idiot.

A pic of the two distributors may help for comparison. You may have to switch to a new distributor. When i did the HEI swap, i used a distributor out of a chev pickup with a 6 cylinder engine and changed the drive gear. I used a gear from MSD

Yes, I believe I will have to go and get a HEI distributor from 6 cyl with gear change and use the vacuum advance. I may go to pick n pull and try a 4.0l with coil as well.
