track bar or no track bar ??
« on: January 03, 2008, 02:03:51 AM »
ok here we go I put on a 6" lift with 35"tires this past spring (89'YJ) and everything was great untill i had some idiot in a 5 tonn truck rip my left front side wall of of my 35"s and dragged my rig 5 ft down the road (jeep was parked)... now i have problems with my rig wondering (darting) on the road (mostly to the right). I took it into have the alignment checked and everything was fairly close except that when this idiot hit my rig he streched the spring 1/2" i took it to a spring shop and they fixed that. now i am still having problems with my rig darting mainly to the right, the alignment shop says i should put my track bar back in and it will all go away But why did i not have this problem when i first did the lift and removed the trac bar? should i make a adjustable Track bar? if so any ideas as to how to start (i read all the posts in the TJ form) any help at all would be appreciated thanks in advance

Might have perma twisted some bushings, or tweaked a shackle from the force of getting pulled like that.

If it is pulling on your hands at the steering wheel, I would say wheelbase is longer on one side than the other due to something bent in the axle mounting or a bent diff itself. Also check to see if the centre bolt on the spring pack is in the mount properly. Are both front tires simillar in tread depth and pressure as you said you had one side wall ripped.

Two other possibilities an alignment shop may or may not have noticed.  One being that depending on how hard it was hit on the wheel the left frame rail may have pulled ahead slightly causing a dog tracking problem ( 4 wheel alignment would pick this up though) or Two, again depending on the severity of the hit the sector shaft in your steering box may have been tweaked.  To check your s/box count the turns on your steering wheel " lock to lock" then go back exactly half.  Your steering wheel should be staight with wheels straight.  These two suggestions may seem extreme but working a bunch of years in a alignment and spring shop I've seen it all.

Another thing I just thougt of possible tire pull.  You must have a different tire on the left now?  Swap front tires side to side see if it goes left.  I've seen tire pulls in brand new and used tires.   As for the track bar it may help it steer better but won't fix a pull.

The track bar is used to center the axle.   With a six inch lift you would have to use an adjustable one.  When I put one in it fixed a slight pull and the vehicle now tracks far better at highway speed.
