new to jeep life could use help please
« on: January 12, 2008, 09:03:41 PM »
hi there. i just bought a 90 yj that need some work and was wondering if you guys could offer up some advice. First there's the 5 speed tranny that refuses to let me use 5th gear and reverse, it.s mated to a carburated 4.0l the 4,2 i was told blew up.Then there's things like seats are shot, floor has to be done .What i was wondering is best places to get parts and advice on the tranny issue. I live in medicine hat and have noticed some pretty cool jeeps out there hopefully i can make some contacts and learn more about the jeep live and how to care of my new toy. All advice would be greatly appreciated thank you :)

Cheapest tranny fix would probably be a straight out swap, as they can be had for about $2-300.  You're looking for an AX-15 to mate to that 4.0 engine - the AX-5 tranny is for the 2.5 4cyl engine.

Seats - easy swap.

Floors....cut and weld in new metal.  Only REAL fix for that.

Go to a dealer and you will pay a lot for fixes, but really learn nothing.  Spend some time talking to jeep guys, visiting them, and offering to help them out in exchange for info, and you'll learn more than you ever thought. :)

thanks again. the mechanic at work  and his brother figure it's either a fork or fork shim  we'll find out when we pull the tranny next weekend. the floor will be worked on this week i'm getting a crash course in welding ;D. the only thing left is to find seats which shouldn't be hard after seeing all the parts for sale on this site. i'm hoping to make new friends in the jeep community and be able to help them with working on their jeeps and also gain knowledge from them . thanks for all your input hopefully she'll be on the road very soon :)
