Collective Tool Question

I’m new to the off roading world and have a question about what tools should be carried with you on the trail. I could carry my full tool box but I would have no room for anything. I gust wondering what the collective mind has to say about this. I have a 95 Cherokee, is their anything special I should carry because of it.

13mm, 12 point socket for removing the bolts holding the unit bearing to the knuckle, also a 36mm hub socket and breaker bar for the axle shaft nut. Its a good idea on a new rig to break these bolts and nuts loose  and then retorque at home before hitting the trail. They can be quite stiff. I broke a snap on breaker bar trying to get my axleshaft nuts loose. Also make sure you have the coorect tools for removing the brakes. Mine used a special allen socket(7mm I think) and for some reason the allen head set I had just happened to skip that size.

There are lots of torx bolts as well on those rigs, so  a good torx set would be availsable, especially the one for the trac bar.

I take my Craftsman socket set with me....you never know when someone has replaced a metric bolt with something Imperial or vice versa.

Check you socket set, many kits just come with regular 6 point sockets. If you blow a unit bearing(fairly common) or u-joint, you'll be looking for a 13mm, 12point to get those bolts off.

Here is basically what I carry, 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2" sockets and ratchets, both metric and imperial, combination wrenches both metric and imperial, misc sockets and such as mentioned above (torx, 36 mm, flare wrenches), an assortment of screwdrivers and pliers, vise-grips, duct tape.  That about covers the major things I carry.

I bring along a small cheap little gear puller too, When I did my unit bearings, I had to use a puller to get them off they where siezed so bad.

I would add a ujoint tool, spare ujoints, starter, and alternator to the list.  Otherwise my list sounds pretty similar too BlackYJ's

hmm...I've been poked fun at as taking too much be able to fix what I can. Nothing really special like spare alternators or starters, but I do pack a heavy tool box.

Screwdrivers; 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2" sockets (metric and sae) with ratchets and breaker bars; full wrench set; pliers; side cutters; crimpers; vise grips; electrical tester; allen keys/drivers; mechanics tie wire; misc electrical items (fuses, light bulbs, wire, terminals); small butane torch; pry bars; hub socket; 3lb club hammer; snipe (piece of pipe); rags; and probably a bunch of stuff I'm forgetting.

While we are on the topic, how does everyone keep their items locked down, in case of a rollover to prevent projectiles? (nothing like a BFH off the head while rolling your prize toy..... )

i keep all my gear in the back of zj, in a large plastic box that wedges between by 33" spare and the wheel well hump on the other side, then strap everything down securely .   when i put it on its side  ..... it moved around a bit but stayed in place.

I carried a LOT of gear in the back of my XJ. Just started to tie it in about a month before I put it on its lid. 

Have two large/deep rubermaids tied down with HD cargo straps. When I put it on its roof everything stayed where it was supposed to. Well everything in the back anyway, you would believe all the crap that showed up from under the seats, out of the dash, all the cubbys and center console emptied out......
