My 97 4banger ran like crap without the cat,  I changed both the o2 sensors at the same time as I put in a new hi-flow Magna flow cat, My heep then ran way better.
So was it the new cat or the sensors?? I dunno.
If you look around you may find a good price on the magnaflow
I used to have an open mind but my brains kept falling out.

It will run fine without the Cat but you must retain the O2 sensors. If there is an O2 sensor in the Cat then you need to put one into the pipe that replace it.
