4WD Rallys
« on: March 21, 2008, 06:49:36 PM »
I have a question, and maybe I'm dating myself but I have to ask. Years ago there used to be organized 4WD rallys where there was mud bogging, drag racing and hill climbing. What happened to these rallys and why?

I guess it all depends what you class as dating yourself. If you go back to the years that about 6 or more clubs across Alberta put the rallies on there was never a mud bog included, but an obstacle course with small mud holes on them sometimes. Drags, hill climb then towards the end of those days team relays became popular.
The ones I.m talking about go back to the 70's then faded out in the 80's except for the one put on by the Ground Pouders well into the 90's but they never had hill climb that I recall.
I do know that the HighRiders are putting an event on in Drumhellar agian this summer that would includ the mud bog event, so that's why I wonder how far back are you talking.

I remember rally's in different areas including B.C. Where various events were held And I just don't hear too much about these get togethers.

Remember the Calgary Mountain Cats, Lethbridge Koulie Kruisers, wow back a few days, there were rallys in a bunch of locations. Kalispel, cranbrook, lethbridge, two in calgary. Drags, obsticle course, hill climb, pole bending and a bunch of skills. I'm guessing tyhe liability issues just got way too much for the clubs to take on, not to mention the costs in rebuilding a jeep for every long week end. I think there should be about a hundred hours of 8mm ( if the wife hasn't hucked it) should try and transfer to digital.

Here's some pics of the old days on our Lethbridge Coulee Kruzers Jeep Club website.  Go a bit down and there are pics of the rally's.  I couldn't tell you if these are ones our Club hosted or ones that our Club attended.  Although I know they used to hold the Lethbridge ones down in the riverbottom at a members farm.  We recently were contacted by the daughter of this past member. I would love to get down there sometime this summer and see the old site.  Here's the link:

Hey great pics, one of them is my mom, they look to all be at the lethbridge rally. They were done before I had a chance to race, but the parents took home top eliminater most rallys.

The only one that I know has a distinguishable face is Joanne.  Then again I  wasn't around to know the Jeeps in the pics and who belonged to who.
