Because of this

I have to do this

or this


it doesn't matter of the scoop is open  as the intake system is closed and water and dirt  won't be an issue.
The only real issue besides height is that the cummins will shake 1 to 2 inches side to side during start up and shut down
What would you prefer?
I like the scoop open forward

do you have to use the scoop??? maybe a smaller cowl induction type.

Ya, I gotta use the scoop, the air intake on the cummins is 1/2 higher than the hood, I got the old Trans am hood scoop for 20 bucks so I thought that was OK. Having the scoop forward will evacuate the engine bay of hot air while running down the road so I do agree the forward facing scoop will work better :)

I've already put in a 1 inch lift, I dont really want to go much higher. It's already starting to look tippsy.
The frame is no 30 inchs from the floor, did I mention I'm short and FAT ? ;)

Fred, did you say the frame is 30" from the floor? Thats not the low point under the rocker is it?

If so, thats not starting to look tippy, thats really darn high.

For example

My jeep on 38" tires, full width axles, and 10" of wheelbase stretch. The frame is 21" from the floor.



If you can you want to keep that frame below 25" as a max, especially with stock wheelbase, and anything less then a full width axle.

If you can of course.

Facing forward,
The purpose of a rear facing scoop is to catch the cold/ clean air coming of the windshield, as in the phrase "cowl induction". From the pics it looks like the scoop is too far forward to really benefit from that effect.
I think either way will allow the hot air to escape. Facing forward will allow cold air to come in and push out the hot air underneath,
Facing back the air coming in from the grill and the rad fan will push the air out the scoop.
Why not just try it both ways before permanently mounting the scoop.
as far as water, I think if the water is above the hood line you will have bigger issues, ( been there done that) ;D

Surpirsingly the scoop is not that big but I agree forward to push air out.
BNine- The frame is 30 inches to the top at the front and rear, The belly pan is 20 inches an the bottom.
I'm running 33 inch tires with a full width D44 and Ford 9 inch and no stretch.
I don't plan to go any taller with the current set up.

Ahh, ok. I though maybe that was the case.

Thats awsome Fred. You'll like the way she handles with that kind of CoG.

I agree with Ian. Try both ways. You can use a thermal gun or something and take temp shots, then do a comparison.

I 'm a real fan of a shaker style hood/intake like on old mopar muscle cars,  looks real nice when the eng moves side to side under torgue and pretty low profile ...

I can see you put alot of work into the gem and pretty sure you can fab such a thing,  maybe something to consider for the future ...

bet your' itch'n to get that on the trails!   vroooooooooooooooooooooooooooom !

That's a Trans Am shaker ;)
I'm soooo itchy I could scream. I've done some wrenching, lots of reading and listened to some very good advise from some very knowledgable people  ;), you know who you are. I have a really good crew behind me as well, I run a fleet maintenance shop so I also tap the knowledge and skill of them when required. I was shooting for May long but I think it's going to take longer than that, I'm waiting on some key components to come back from the machine shop. The Jeeps wiring is a mess YADA YADA
