Lift Kits....

I have stock, except 30" BfG's Mt's, and was going to buy a winch. My good knowledgable off-road friend said I should get a susp. lift 1st. I always thought the first upgrades to do were tires then winch. What do you think, and where and what is the best lift to get. I was thinking 2-3".
The winch I was looking at (Costco 8000lbs) is under $500, so I know that if I get a lift it is more than that but how much more and of course bigger tires, so I'm looking at $1000's. What are the opinions and advice out there? Thanks.

Costco winches are cheap and they work but if you want quality go with Warn.  You usually can find a used Warn for around $600-$1000, and if you want to best go with a Warn 8274.

If you are running a smaller tire size I would go with a good, Warn winch, over bigger tires. I am only running 31's and my Warn 8274 is my lifeline. It is definatly a good investment. Bigger tires mean bigger stuck's and you need some way to get your jeep out.

Luke... get the winch. Lift will mean more cash for tires, then you'll want a SYE and drive shaft. it is a steep and slippery and expensive slope.  save up for the lift you want and research the heck out of it.

Sorry the vehicle is 98 TJ 4L Sport. Thanks to all for re-confirming what I was thinking in the first place. It seems that when I am out on trails, in most situations, I find myself stopped not by the terrain or obstacle, its not having that reasurence of an escape. If I have a lift, I figure I will still feel the same way. I reckon I got 2 yrs left on my tires so maybe then I will look at upgrade and height. Winch it will be. By the way this winch will be coming compliments of Ralph Klein and the Government of Alberta.

the 9.5xp is acutally faster under load than the 8274.  I know you aren't going to believe me so check out the new edition of can4x4 mag. and as for that rut run, it had nothing to do with the winch.

My 8274 is the best part of my truck.  I'd find an old one and rebuild it rather than buy a new winch.  I can't imagine anything faster (even though there could very well be!), but mines plenty fast enough, beat some newer warns out on the trail.  Trust me, I end up winching myself a lot.

I've got the slowest winch in town. Slow an steady thats what I say.

The 9.5 vs 8274 debate is kind of a waste. They are two different winches.

If you like unloaded insane spooling in and out speed.......8274

If you are more concerned with pulling speed...9.5

9.5 compact

82 blocks half your front end

9.5 100ft of cable

82, how much cable do you want on it

They are to different to ague about imo.

That costco one will work for the poster. Slow and steady, and a few guys here run them.

bs on that, compare a 05 winch to a 05 winch i.e. 9.5 to the 8274-50. and maybe at >= 8000lbs the 9.5 is faster. but for MOST PULLS (<= 6000lbs) the up right kicks its ... Especially if you pump 24V through it.

note #1) I have a 9.5TI and love it. It's lighter, lower and can pull a heavier load if needed. The extra 25tf of cable would be nice but I haven't needed it yet.

note #2) the 8274-50 is too dam fast! It's tough to time the respool properly so you don't rip off a tow hook or pull the winch hook right through the fairlead.

Thats the only problem I have with my 8274.  Other than that its great.
