tall guy wants his first jeep
« on: May 06, 2008, 10:20:24 PM »
Hello,
i'm about a month and a half  away from getting my drivers license, and i'm looking into buying my first car! i want to get me a TJ.

one thing that worries me though is my height. i'm 6 feet 9 inches tall and in some cars i have trouble sitting comfortably in the passengers seat let alone trying to wrap my legs around the steering wheel to try to reach the brake pedal.

can anyone fill me in on how good TJ's are for leg room? do they have a big protruding dashboard that sits where my knee's would like to sit?

my plan is if i can't fit into one comfortably, to rip out the front seats, and weld them in about 6 inches further back.  does anyone know anything about how hard this would be to do? would i just need a screwdriver and the welding kit i have at my work? or would i need special pieces, or something fancy done?

wow 6'9". haha. you should have bought old chevy!! im 6' and cant fit in there. and about your seat problems.... get it inspected first then do it. just 8 grade bolts should work. or you could even weld it back. if you have a welder at your work chances are someone there knows how to weld. i dont see why you couldnt do it that way. but make sure they know how to weld!! a seats being stationary is not one of those things you want any "ifie" feelings about.

well, i don't want the seat to be stationary. i'm not too sure because i've never owned a car to take a really good look at.  but what i assume is that the seat slides back and forth on some sort of track.
what i would want to do, is take the track off and weld or bolt that in about 6 inches back.  so i think i could have it so the seat is still adjustable.  just only adjustable for people who are 6 feet to 7 feet tall, and not people who are 5 feet to 6 feet tall.

I am only 6'4" and I find the YJ,TJ ect body to be tight to drive(Thats why I am in a ZJ).  Especially if they are manual, the dash is not very forgiving when you try to push in the clutch and smash your knees against it.  You may want to consider a cherokee or grand cherokee.  I find that they have alot more leg room.

The XJs are better than the SWB Jeeps but still not great, I'm 6ft and in my old XJ I drove with the seat all the way back and it was comfortable. Worked out well as my wife was all the way forward.  8)

The ZJ I have now has much more room and with the seat adjusted for me there is still more to go back.

You sound like you are set on a TJ though.  You are just going to have to drive one and see how it is. If you do move the seats back though you may need to reinforce the floor where the bolts go thru. The floor is usually extra thick in those spots.

Keep in mind the 2003 and newer TJ's have less seating room due to revised seat height and deeper safety knee bolsters for crash safety so you will probably want to look at 97 to 02.

I've got an '02 2.5L 4 cyl for sale with 108XXXkm's three tops maroon with tan interior, tan hard top, black soft top and bikini top.  Has class 3 hitch, front tow hooks.  New BFG AT ko's 30x9.5 at 95,000, new clutch and throwout bearing at 80,000kms as the throwout bearing kicked the bucket.  Will be putting in new windshield (or giving credit for one).  K&N filter, oil and filter and diffs and transmission/xfer case fluids changed religously since I bought it at 40,000km. Tune up at 90,000km....Has a scar on the back left corner from backing into a concrete column but is easily fixable (or coverable with trail corners) otherwise the Jeep is in great condition.  Hasn't been offroad since I bought it, unless you call a commercial jobsite offroad.  Daily commuter and long distance travel vehicle.  Does relatively good on the highway.

Message me for price if your interested.

I have driven a couple TJs and I find that I have more room in a YJ than the TJs.  So if you are set on a TJ style Jeep have a look at some YJs as well.

Contact Rob1313 on the Edmonton Jeep site, he is your hieght, and is a big guy. He was going to get me to cut and weld on his TJ seats, but then he found a relocation kit instead. I think he said easy install, and works well.
If you dont reach him online, send me a message and I will give you his cell.
Come to think of it, I think his Jeep is for sale right now!
Cheers, Craig

thats another issue with moving the seat back. your side view is all B pillar. even if the hardtop is off its not a great view. seeing traffic lights would be a pain. id say stop by a dealership and ask to sit in a few different jeeps. the used lots will have the older TJ's, XJ's, ZJ's, and WJ's. if yer dead set on a tj then maybe an unlimited might help in your custom seat idea. if not, look at the grand cherokee or go fullsize from the big 3, bronco, blazer, ramcharger. avoid toyotas or nissans. not meant for tall people.
good luck dude;)

Talk to Petey100 on here. I got a soft top from him. He modded a 97 TJ to fit him. I think he's 6.6" or something along those lines.

Listen Brad Pitt, keep your ego remarks to yourself. ;) And I'm not tall. I'm 6'4". That means almost average. 6'9" is tall. Hahahaha. And I cut out not only th eplastic part but the metal pasrt as well as the air ducts. Quite a bit more work than I anticipated. On the other hand I only did that so I would not hit my shins on the dash when clutching in. But if I wanted I easily could have lived with the stock set up.

What is your inseem tall guy? I'm 37". This will matter more than overall height. You could get lower/taller seat brackets or modify the stock ones depending on what you need (taller for longer legs, lower for long upper body) or just shift them back a few inches and be done. I'd try to redrill the stock and move the seat back couple to 4 inches and that should do you nicely. Shoulder room is another thing. I'm kind of skinny so I fit but if you're a big guy, you'll be on that roll bar/side window all the time. But that's part of driving a Jeep. ;)
