Where to inspect a jeep that I want to buy?
« on: September 22, 2005, 03:33:45 PM »
Hello all,
Need your help asap. Just moved to Calgary.

So far found a jeep that I really liked. Consider taking it for an inspection. Could you please advise me of any shop or an indy to make a thourough inspection? To avoid any "advertisement in the forum" thing, please write me a private message.

Also a question - What is the average cost of replacing two CV boots? They both are torn. Recently though, as there are no clicks when turning with the steering wheel completely turned right or left.

Thanks a bunch guys.

Well some go with a simple safety inspection which costs like $30, but I personally like to do a full inspection which can be done anywhere for like $100. I haven't done one in a while, last one I did was in edmonton at a Petro Canada shop, rented a suburban and uhaul to tow it down to calgary. I would personally stay the hell away from Canadian Tire. I almost think their front desk clerks get commission to jack up repairs. Alberta Motor Association might do inspections, but I cant be sure on that, that would be your safest bet. Tell us what year and model your buying.

Hey, CanaMatt,

Thanks for answering. I think there should be a private message in your 'box. :D  I've just landed and am through the settling down process.
Found a Jeep basically just round the corner from the place I am staying at.
A youngish couple selling a local '96 Laredo with 201 000 for 6900 firm. There is some paperwork, including the 40 point check done in this April. The paper says the viscous coupling is going south, as well as the rear wheel bearings. As I said, I drove it (slowly) around,U-turned as sharply as possible and it rolled freely with engine idling, no clicks, no hops. I plan to have another go tomorrow, to check for whines. By the way, how to shift the transfer case to check if it works/shifts OK? On the fly or I have to stop completely first? It is a 249OD.
The exhaust manifold was swapped for a new one, as well as the seal in the rear diff (or so he said). The rear seal in the engine leaks a bit. And I forgot to check the air filter for traces of oil.
There are no problems with the body, and doors do not sag except that there are several small paint bubbles on the lower edge of the tailgate, stone chipping on the bonnet and cracked windshield. There are no more rust spots. Interior is pristine, a/c works.
The CV boots are torn on the front, but CV joints are OK, they do not click as yet.

I wanna try to move them down a bit. The bad part is that I really liked this Jeep...

Whaddya think?
