Welded 8.8 ??
« on: May 16, 2008, 08:45:01 AM »
Never driven a vehicle with a welded or spooled rear end.  How muck do the tires squak when you turn & can an 8.8 handle being welded or spooled?

I run 36/12.5/15 Bias super swampers.

If this is a no go I am thinking of getting a detroit for it.  How loud is the racheting in the locker when you turn?  I heard one once and it sounded like the rear end was going to come apart.  Mind you it was in a 60 with 40" tires.

I have heard several people on other forums state that once people go to a spool they will never go back to a detroit style locker.  The spools or welded carriers are supposed to be far more predictable.

I think on the 8.8 the carrier is a little weak but can be solved with a carrier replacement style locker, and plus the Lincoln lockers are only as strong as your welds and spools are relatively cheap

the swampers will squawk to some degree ;)... a hell of a lot less than say a set of AT or even some MT >:( due the soft compound and the flex in the big lugs.  i have  98 ZJ that the DSPO :-X welded the turdy-5 up.... predictable as hell... never had to worry about it unlocking... just in this cass...breaking... took out an axle shaft before the case had a chance to go... planning on a 8.8 swap ... just need the time and the $$$ :)

buddy has a welded 8.8 in his commanche and we cna't hear a thing ever. i think its cause its so damn light in the rear the tires skip without touching the ground haha.    however i thik you could get away with it. i ran an EZ locker in my ford for years and never broke anything, and i was hard on it........
