cherokee fuel sending unit/brake light problem
« on: May 28, 2008, 09:35:32 PM »
Here's a question for those 4.0L swappers out there....Did the 4.0L swap with under the hood and dash wiring harness and fuel tank into a 87' YJ that had a 2.5l in it. Everything is working fine except for 2 items. #1 is that the stock fuel gauge always reads full when hooked up. Is the sending unit from the 94' cherokee campatible with the stock 2.5l fuel gauge? #2 is that I can get the brake lites to work, can get signal lites to work seperately, however, cannot get brake lites to work in conjunction with signal lites. With brake pedal pressed, signal lite selected will stay on steady and the other brake lite goes out. Does the fact that the cherokee uses a separate bulb for signalling have an effect on this? Lots of head scratching  :o! Any help is appreciated.

Yes it does. Did you run the the XJ tailight wiring all the way to the back?

Yes/no, depends on how its hooked up under the dash. The XJ wiring has seperate wires/bulbs for the brake light(red light on an XJ) and the yellow turn lights. Where ever you spiliced the XJ dash wiring to the YJ taillights you need to install a diode pack to merge the wires.

It will take the  5 wires(left turn, right turn, brake, taillight, ground) from the XJ wiring and give 4 output wires(left turn/brake, right turn/brake, taillight, ground) that properly run the YJ lights.

This box is easily found anywhere that sells trailer parts for about $30-$60. Its needed when putting a trailer plug on a vehicle has serperate turn/brake lights(such as an XJ).
