oil additives and old engines
« on: June 27, 2008, 05:33:15 PM »
ive read in a few magazines that the newer blends of oil dont have the additives needed for old style engines. what i want to know is what addives would you recommend. the old stand by was to use 15w 40 or 20w50 for heavy trucks but because of emissions they had to cut the ingrediants that prevent wear on antique engines. the reason i ask is i need to do an oil change on the 58 fc, and it has the stock engine. ive heard of some poeple useing an engine break in additive with every oil change. any ideas.

i work with old cars daily.  you are correct about the additives and the fix.  we used comp cams engine break in stuff.  one bottle in the engine and top up with the oil of your choice.

I mix in lucas for all my older motors

I swear by it for helping engines last that little bit longer

my first turbo 2.0,.. spun a rod - 300k on the motor,.. I milled the rod end so the clearance wasn't bad - not good either,.. but totally unbalanced everything.

Ran 50% lucas and 50% 20w50 - ran it for 6 months on 15psi, never blew

Lucas x2... it's killah....

I use to run synthetic oil.. my jeep was leaking like a bastard... I switched back to ordinary 5w30 and i'm adding 20% of Lucas additive. Like a miracle it stopped (it still sweat a bit but not much).... I put the stuff in tranny (w/ 75W90 synthetic oil) and in my t-case... it's good stuff
