« on: July 24, 2008, 03:13:48 PM »
a buddys jeep has this god awful squeal in his jeep, like a loose belt or pully or something like that. but hes had it in to the shop and they changed the belt and the idler pully and tightened everything up, new belt and all and its still squealin like a banshee, not as bad, but still doing it. what might be the prob? can anyone offer anything? its in a 2.5 yj, 94.

has he had his Power steering pump checked.... that would by my guess, if you are sure its not coming from the motor itself. could also be the water pump or Alt but they tend to be alot quieter when they go.

yeah, no it doesnt appear to be any of that, everything is good with those components. how could it be coming from the motor? and how do you fix that? it all started with a belt shredding, and now it wont quite squealing. just talked to the shop its at and theyre going to try to diagnose the issue tomorrow and hopefully fix it.

I take it the squeal happens with the Jeep moving and stopped, so you have ruled out anything in the driveline?  If it is squealing badly it is most like a bearing somewhere.  When my power steering pump bearing went, the squealing got louder when I was turning

If it started when the belt shreded it should be related to a pully or one of the compnents hooked directly to the belt system. If it were the power steering pump or the alternator it should be easy to isolate the sound from the engine, if the sound is coming from closer to the motor and the vehicle still drives and runs then my next guess would be the water pump or a bearing in the water pump (hows his temp does it fluctuate wildly), another posibility is that the belt blowing was simply routine wear on the belt and a piece has lodged itself into one of the pullies or there may be some dirt or other debris jammed in there.

yeah it was an alignment issue when the belt shredded. it squeals when its driving and stopped yes...ill mention the bearing possibility tomorrow when i call them.

so theyve narrowed it down to being the water pump pulley thats causing the grief with the squealing and belt shredding. he said the pulley is worn on the side of it and therefore throwing the belt off alignmetn and shredding it, and causing the squeal. does this sound right to you guys?

i saw where he showed me how the belt should line up on the pulley and it clearly wasnt lined up.

I would suspect that there is more going on than the pully being simply worn down a little.... this just should not happen thru normal wear-and-tear. If it was my choice I would replace the entire pump as I suspect that the bearings in the pump are shot and are causing the miss alignment of the belt and wearing of the pully.            Just my two cents!
