spare up top - YJ
« on: August 02, 2008, 07:57:30 PM »
While in the middle of offer/counter offer,.. I got busy

(I hate waiting for the other party)

I moved the spare to above my roll cage

My flux core mig welding SuxXors! (but it works and is holding)

And built a tray off the back hatch. (had left over parts from when I miniturized my old bbq for trail trips)

I thought I was a good idea :D

I can't use my garage right now anyways - mechanic friend is using it.

I wanted to make more space,.. both my kids want to come next time,.. but I like to bring a bbq and etc.

The only way to do that is move the spare up and build a tray for my bbq on the back.

I suppose I could strap a few more things up top too.

This is just a summer set up,.. would take only a few minutes to move the spare back onto the gate - I used existing bolts for everything.

I know eventually I want to make a good rack where I can still use my hard and soft top,.. but for now this works and both my kids can come out and play next time :D

hey Jay i see a couple of things that worry me.  it looks like your mounting with clamps and not u-bolts.  if your really off camber id hate to see the tire fall off.  being so high it would probably catch every tree you drive under on a trail.  when you do change the tire, chances are its dirty and muddy above the kids.
Is that bbq storage or bbq platform so close to your gas tank??.

i use a really thin coleman bbq that works great and has a stove burner too.   packs up small.    why wouldnt you just build a hitch receiver basket?  Dave

All I had were 2.5" clamps at the time and they didn't fit,.. got 3" and barely got them on
