Painting the frame

After spending a lot of time underneith the TJ, I figured I would try and make everything look a little newer.  Almost every component has light surface rust which could be loosened up with a half-arse wire brush job.  My question is, has anyone just spray bombed the underneith with Rustoleum or something similar.

I don't have the room or the means to remove things such as axles, driveshafts etc. so was thinking of just painting it right then and there.  Any recomendations?  Just hit it with the paint or cover in primer and then go?

POR = paint over rust

National sells it approximately  60-80 bucks a quart last I checked

I have heard that unless you remove all the rust before you paint it will rust through anything other than POR

Use a rust converter.  Allot of oilfield manufactuing companies use these  on all of their products.  You paint it on with a foam brush.  It is very thin so it is easy to get into tight spots.  When you apply it it is a whiteish purple color, but when it dries & has reacted with the rust it turns a flat black.  This stuff will not only make rusty areas look good but also stop rust.  Stuff is about $60-$70 a litre.  I guess a litre would cover about 2 frames.  I cannot remember the name of the stuff, I buy it from my wurth dealer & they just label it as rust converter but I know you can buy it other places.  If you are interested send me a PM and I can find out where you can get it in Calgary.

I like the sounds of that stuff.  Seems like it would be a little more manageable over the POR-15
Is it any good at filling in pits scratches etc. or is it just a thin coating?

Not even really a coating, it bind with the rust & converts it to a carbon(or so I was told by the sales guy)  I have used it several times & a buddy of mine who is a welder at a fab shop says they use it on everthing that is going to sit outside.

I'll second this type of product.  The frame on the TJ is about 1/2 done now.  The rust converter I use is from Princess Auto.
Did the Toyota with a product that I haven't been able to find: Rust-Mort.  It lasted almost 5 years before I started seeing signs that rust was coming back.
