Camshaft / Roller Rockers for the 4.0L

Still putting the squeeze on the 4.o for more juice.....Edge TB and module still not here !! >:( >:(.
Just ordered new Harland Sharp roller rockers and I'm thinking I should look at a new camshaft while I'm at it.....Possibly the Crane 753905
Anyone swapped theirs out in Late model TJ ??

It appears that this cam is not computer complient.  So if you install it plan on a few hundred dollars more & a few weeks of down time for a computer reprogram.  If you want a reprogram call these guys.  In my opinion they are the best in western Canada.  Not sure if they program jeep computers but give them a call & see.

How did you come to that conclusion ???? Other than the #3 in Camshaft Application Information.........Guess I'll have to e-mail their tech line and find out for sure.  ???

It appears that this cam is not computer complient.

I'm smellin the birth of a 'stroker project'

labour wise the cam is 10x more work, top and front of engine come off ...

interesting that cam is listed in stroker builds ...   ::)  ... maybe a nice 4.5L ?

Darcy,

I have camshaft part numbers for you, and the right cam for the job. 4.0 cam selection is tricky.

Just getting ready to go camping, but I'll get in touch with you next week if I dont meet up with you this weekend.

A stroker may very well be in the future for RUBI.................the 5.7 conversion is VERY $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and I also do not wish to sacrifice my manual gear box !!
So..........everything that can be bolted onto the 4.0 for now and still be a benefit to a stoker project....even better !!

Bnine.........I figured U be up for some input !!  ;)

COMP Cams Extreme 4x4 ,.. its computer friendly, but you will need Hesco Valve springs to keep the bind away,... worth every penny

Springs are an easy swap..........and since I'll be pulling the head anyways to do the cam swap, might as well look at doing some mild porting and gasket matching. This is gonna have to wait till winter sets in I think....hunting season just around the corner now, and still need to get out a few more times before the snow sets in !!  ;)

The springs are NOT an easy swap,.. The Hesco springs require the spring height to be lowered and the Hesco springs are the only ones you can run with higher lift Cams,.. Comp lists springs but DON'T buy them,.. I have a set thats useless to me as Comps site was incorrect. I spent a few hours on the phone with their tech department, take my word on this! I had my head ported and polished and combined with the lumpy cam the throttle response is phenomenal all the way through the RPM range! If you want more info on how everything I did and the trouble I encountered e-mail me

More affordable and simpler solution to springs is Mopar 360 dual springs.

I have a recipe for the springs, keepers, etc etc. I'll get it all to you by the time you are ready Darcy.

When you are ready for the headwork, you want to talk to gearhead on here.

Some valve spring comments.........

Selecting valve springs can get slightly confusing if you havn't done it before , with a little research it's not a big deal.

Some measurments are required to get the best match / results , such as  I.D. , O.D. , installed height , seat pressure , pressure when open @ full lift etc.

Comp valvetrain kits for 4.0 engines contain the right springs but NOT the correct retainers or locks , specifically , they need to get with the program , the retainers and locks provided in thier kits are for 4.2 engines which use 3/8" valve stems , 4.0 engines use 5/16" valve stems. Additionally , there are variations on the grooves machined in the valve stems where the locks sit , some are a shouldered groove  with a reduced diameter and a single edge or step that the locks rest against . Others have  a pair of smooth radiused grooves , similar to what an "O" ring groove may look like , these are known as bead locks , a special order from Comp Cams. Bead locks are also used on LS1 valve stems which by coincidence are also 5/16" stem diameter.

Here's what I do , sit down with a Comp cams catalog , choose springs , retainers & locks based on what is actually needed and will work with the cam being used , while taking  care to not choose a spring that is too aggressive.

The latest trend in springs is "beehive" designs , the benefits are  , reduced harmonics  , the ability to run a less aggresive spring for a given camshaft , less inertia , low weight / reduced diameter retainers , easily clear valve covers when clearances are an issue and more............. Downside of beehive springs is they are a little more expensive , upside ? , I know I'm the only one in the hood that has them.

I recently bought a set of beehive springs to be used in a couple of projects , carefully chosen and ordered as a set of sixteen ( for a V8 ) , twelve of them for a big valve 4.0 head ( to be done later ) the other four will get used in a Harley Davidson / Buell  hotrod project . Chosen carfully these will work for both applications , when combined with the correct retainers and locks.  The 4.0 head that is on my YJ has Comp springs and genuine Harley Davidson locks  & valve seals .
No , I'm not a mad scientist , I just happen to have a bit of an imagination and a handle on how stuff works.

Well said! Kudos to you for suck an indepth post, I opted for the Hesco springs for the above retainer issues. The Hesco springs allowed me to retain my stock vavles and retainers as my head was brand new when I decided to add the camshaft. Bennie at Hesco is AMAZING with 4.0 engines,.. if you ever have a chance give them a call! Its worth the phone call to get all the insights
