Title: RESPECT!!!
Post by: Shearcon79 on February 23, 2011, 09:05:54 PM
In short there seems to be a lack thereof.
So many times I read threads on here and am very disappointed by the rude remarks by some of the CJA Executives and a few others that have been around for a while. Why is it that just because someone is new and wanting to attempt a mod that they catch flack for not already knowing the ins and outs of the entire procedure?  Or if they have asked what may seems like a common knowledge question they are made a joke of.
I am getting really turned off by the arrogance that is so common here. Some people here need to remember when they were the noobs and didn't know it all it was nice to know others were there to help without belittlement.

Just Sayin!

No offense or anything, but when do newbs or rookies or green guys ever get respect?

I'm not talking about offroading, but life in general. Military, apprentices, frat houses, etc....

To me respect is earned, not given out like candy at Halloween.

Again, no offense, I do see what your shooting for.

The great thing about the interwebs is everything can be turned into a joke. The terrible thing about the interwebs is that unless you are overly gay and use emoticons for EVERYTHING all you have to work with is text. This leaves a lot open to interpretation. Compounded by the fact that the technology availible to us makes us lazier and lazier every day (thus conversations are cut down to one or two lines) what is meant to be a quick witty reply can easiliy come off as being overly rude.

That and after you see the same question(s) repeating every 2 weeks your answers stop being long in depth explainations and start becoming shorter and more directly to the point.

alot of newbs seem to want the answers given to them     instead of doing research then asking other what teh best option would be from his or hers research

look into things your self    if u cant find the answer then maybe someone will give out some guidence but u have to try your self first

there are several  things going on here with newbbs.

Every 4 to 6 months a bunch of new people come on, all gun hoe and thinking they are the biggest bad asses with 31s and a shiny new winch. they ask a bunch of questions come out on a run or two brake a bunch of parts and then go "this game is expensive" and go back to where ever they came from. now 4 to 6 months later a next group come along and the same thing. Now the people that have been around for some time get tiered of answering these questions so the sarcasm comes out that is not translated in type very well.  I was the new guy at one time.

For the new group with XJs (that is the Cherokees, not the Grand Cherokees the boxy ones) I have body lifts now for sale.

The other group is the new guy that comes on asks a intelligent question and then argues the correct answer for 400 pages. or the new guy starts giving advice to other new guys that is completely wrong or does not work in this part of the world. Remember when on some of the very large "American sites" that wheeling in Alberta Rockies is different to wheeling in Arizona desert, to wheeling in east coast swamp.

RESPECT is not given it is EARNED.

Come out, wheel, lesson to criticizem. adapt, learn and improve and the respect will come.

I was out a couple weeks ago with a newer guy, he was having issues in the snow, we suggested dropping air pressure 5 psi, he asked why, we explained as he did it, it worked. his learning curve went almost start up from there. He has my respect and now I will bring him out to where grown men cry, and I guarantee you will be winching before the day is out fun places.

just because someone has EXEC in their title does not mean they are not human.  and yea, people take written text too harshly often, which is usually their problem, not usually the writers.  unless Billy writes it, then its pretty harsh.
Title: Re: RESPECT!!!
Post by: Shearcon79 on February 24, 2011, 05:37:01 AM
Ok! I am not going to backpeddle or anything but I do understand the phrase that even Exec's are human.  I also understand that RESPECT is earned, but sometimes Respect is worth giving. Respecting someone that you do not know can lead to better relationships in the end.  We all have an opinion or a starting point and don't deserve any disrespect just because of it. I say treat other people with respect until they prove to be different. Guilty until proven Innocent or Innocent until proven guilty? The world would be a much better place if we treated others like we would like to be treated!
I do want to say that I personally have never been offended directly by anyone on here and that is probably because I don't come across as a newbb know-it-all, I certainly don't know it all. I just see so much disrespect at work and around the construction industry and then when I log on to read about Jeeps I see more of it.  There are definitely some times that a little Tact can be used instead of being obviously harsh..or the old phrase " If you don't have anything good to say..." you get the point.
I have wheeled with a few of you and had a great time.  I have seen the sarcastic humor and enjoy it.
Rant over...

This is basically what is boils down to with newbies.  All the info we need is on the web someone, and a couples minutes with GOOGLE will answer a lot of the very basic questions and questions that are asked on a weekly basis here and answered on a weekly basis.  All the elder members did not get to where they are by having their hand held, we had to do our research.  I have no problem passing along the info I know if someone asks an intelligent question

Respect is a two way street.  I would say it is much more important that the person asking for help and that is new to the site/group have respect for the guys that have been around and have the answers.

You will usually see the harsh responses to the hollow questions.

"HELP! WHAT DO I DO WITH THIS?"  vs  "Doing _____, can you point me to where I can get some information on it or do you have any pointers?"  Essentially the same question, but they are going to get VERY different responses on most forums.

I am speaking from a newbs point of view here, and I shake my head almost every day at some of the questions that come up on here.

You are talking as if any of us that deal out harsh justice simply pounce on anyone new.

That is not the case. The NOOBS that get pounced on here get it for a reason. Be it that they are lazy, now it all, ignorant, or begging for free crap, whatever, the harsh responses are there for a reason.

I never get rude with anyone unless they earn. Period.

You have been on this board for a long time. You would have to be blind not to see the changes in the last couple years. Lately, the offroad community has somehow got the impression that if you are an idiot with no money, to lazy to google, and to stupid to form a proper sentence when asking a question, well, the CJA site is for you.

That, combined with the fact that we are currently stuck with a contingent of execs that are so scared of their own shadow they spam the delete post button almost anytime members confront these lazy. broke arse, grammatically challenged retards, makes this board a laughing stock among a lot of the offroad community.

Common courtesy would be to come here and not ask for free stuff. Not posting redundant questions that have been answered a 100 times without even the slightest effort at researching is common courtesy.

Not trying to argue facts with poorly informed opinions because you think you know everything is common courtesy.

Not pretending to know what you are doing and hand out bad advice to newbs because your ego tells you it would be a good idea to play web wheeler today. Thats common coutesy.

The respect starts with coming to a new board and adherring to those unwritten rules. Break those, you get told.

Any other way would just make this board and club a bigger bunch of push overs then they already are.

And thats right, you havnt gotten the harsh treatment because you dont act like an idiot.

You could always start a "who wants to build me a long arm for beer" thread in case you are feeling left out. ;)

http://lmgtfy.com/?q=the+most+commonly+asked+jeep+modification+questions (http://lmgtfy.com/?q=the+most+commonly+asked+jeep+modification+questions)

Ok so now my staff think I am insane...........oh and you oh me a new monitor, this one has coffee on it.

As one of those NOOBs I agree with the whole respect earned not given scenario.  I have spent a lot of money on my rig.............and as such I have spent a lot of time researching how to best spend that money based on what I want to do.  I don't think for a second that all of my choices are the best but they were my choices to make and I did my best to make informed ones.  I have asked a lot of questions but I have spent countless hours reading build threads, mod threads and general discussion threads on many boards.  I have gone to several peoples garages and listened to what worked and what didn't for them.  I have gone wheeling several times with these same people and watched what they do and how their rigs react and I have adjusted some of those things to my driving style and how I want to wheel.  I try to use my brain and not my ego (I am not always successful).

I learn more every day and every day I have more questions.  I am just starting to get to the point that I feel somewhat comfortable in pointing people in the direction of answers but only general answers to questions.  I am not qualified to give mechanical advice either through experience or training so I wouldn't think of doing it.

The wanting things for free stuff actually chaps my arse......I have had a few things that I got rid of and in my mind was more than fair in what I was getting rid of them for, but I would be embarrassed to offer to others what I have been offered for some things or rather been asked to get something to someone at a cost to me never mind just for free.

If you can't be bothered to put in the effort to at least try and find some answers why would you expect people to put in any effort in helping you???

I will say Long Arm for Beer sounds like a good deal though  :o
Title: Re: RESPECT!!!

Just for clarification Sean you're a Newb, not a NOOB. Difference being NOOB is a derogatory term for someone thats essentially an idiot. They can be new, or old. What defines the NOOB is their actions and attitude.

Newb is just someone new and looking to learn.

They are gaming terms. NOOB is pronounced like boob, and newb is new-b, or newbie.

Just because you drive us crazy sometimes with how over zealous you can get, doesnt mean you are even close to noob status :)

It is also worth mentioning that with google thee is probably 10 bits of poor, confusing, missleading, or blatently stupid amounts of infomation for every right answer.....
There have been a few people on here that asked questions then continued down the slope of arguing beyond stupidity, there have been a couple of people who have had some spirited debates, and there have been a couple who got ripped on for asking a question on someones bad day.

In my experience both in person with CJA members as well as this board my experiences have been extremely positive and in general has made owning my jeep an even more positive experience.

I know 4wheeler went down the drain but Redrum had the right idea when he had a section on his site for newbs. Ask any question, no matter how "newb" it may be and have no fear of being flamed. Then when a question is asked you guys that think they are the ultimate wheeler don't even have to lower yourselves go to that section. I've been wheeling nearly 30 years( 5 of those with a  brian) and still consider myself a "newb". Why? Because I will never know everything there is to know about wheeling.  Why it that the wheeling community has become so selfish? I'm amazed there are any new wheeleres when they see these boards and how (some) people conduct them selfes. I try and help out anyone I can with info. I don't mind looking it up. Knowlage is a pretty light load to carry.Ya the same questions may get asked a 100 times but you have this thing called a choice. If you think the post is stupid you have the choice to go on to the next post or thread. If we all keep hating the "newb" where do you think wheeing will be in the not so far future?. Alot of wheelers out there need to take a step back and realize that we need to work together in alot of areas(like this) to keep this hobby/sport alive.  Just my opinion.

I just want to say THANK YOU to bnine. You sure have a way with words. I like your perspective and forthright thinking. I guess we can all get a bit sensitive and I definitely do sometimes. I can understand the frustrations that present themselves with people that have obviously not done previous research.  I myself prefer to do as much research as possible before asking anyone mostly because I believe I can do anything I put my mind to. So if anyone needs any help...Just kidding!!
I will still try to be one that tries tact before smack. Yes some do deserve it!

If a new guy post something stupid

But why post it if it's stupid?  And if no one tells them they are posting something stupid then they will just keep doing it.

I really don't understand where a lot of this is coming from.  Yes there have been some "harsh" responses but those are almost always towards some a$$hat request or a question that was asked 3 posts earlier.

I don't think the majority of these guys have ANY issue helping out, but you have to be willing to help yourself as well.  Also a lot of these guys that are getting flamed need to clue in to stop asking for free stuff.  I don't ask my lifelong friends or family for anything free...why would I ask someone that I have met a couple of times or talked to on forums for it?  If it's offered, then fine.  I am all over free/cheap when I can get it...just don't ask for/expect it.

BTW...I wan't new tires, anyone have some 33"-35" Nitto Trail Grapplers I can have for free?  ::)

frames = cool.... unless its a red XJ right?

can't take life to seriously all the time; otherwise none of us will get out alive;  the interwebs can give mixed perceptions at times, but as most know, (and for those that don't, you can now learn :) ) that just about every person on this board will talk at length to about just about anything jeep related for hours on end, at things like meetings, trail rides/projects etc.

its tough to make accurate judgements on 'internet' personalities. .............. but once you've met a bunch of those people, you can put a face to a name, and not just a few posts....

unless they own a red XJ; they aren't as cool as us square headlight guys right Joe? Trevor, get a frame  ;D ;D ;D

Well, pretty well every angle seems to have been covered on the discussion. However, in my opinion the following link contains what could be a solution for EVERYBODY.
http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=1998336 (http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=1998336)
Yes, I have a Honda addiction  :o, or so the wifey says. For every generation and model there is a FAQ section that contains a vast knowledge base of user-contributed links to reference materials, problem solving threads, common questions, and more technical questions. People who are "new to the game", whether it be Jeeps, Hondas, or custom frackin couch cushions are in general ignorant, not stupid. They just don't know and are eager to learn. I've spoken with people on this forum who have posted "stupid" questions that may seem to be common sense to a lot of us. They've told me in so many words; there's so much conflicting information out there that they'd like an answer from a local with experience. We can turn and say "what are you doing that for, what a waste of time", "you get what you pay for"(ie. something for nothing), etc. And so another opinion based flame-session begins, or another question that was covered 3 years ago comes up again  :o! And we're all left with a bad taste in our mouths over it. I'm sorry for rambling, but threads like this are not unique to CJA as I'm sure most of you know. I've seen complaints about Noobs on forums so much that it's as irritating as the "stupid questions".
I think if a FAQ section was started for xj, zj, cj, yj, tj, jk, etc. and we pulled together and posted links to relevant threads and reference materials, we'd be in good shape. All of you Jeep geniuses out there could focus your experience, knowledge, and passion on more technical threads than "what transmission bolts up to my 4.0 in my stock xj? and "My heater doesn't work!"  :P" The search function is their friend, but it wouldn't hurt if our community was too. Lets build a model specific FAQ section.

Lol....

Jeepless aka TANK

I know I am not a CJA member so my opinion doesn't matter,  but I have belonged to a few other clubs and they seemed like more a comunity than a club.  It would be nice to see some more of that on here.  I have been on a few open runs and everyone was friendly and helpfull,  but it seems  on here sometimes there is a different attitude.  If a new guy post something stupid that you don't want to waste your time on it is kind of counterproductive to spend more engery flameing him for it than to just not post anything.  Also  Someone else might be willing to help or answer a question and it gets lost in the mess of things I am not trying  to squirt anyone off .  Just owning a jeep to me was always like belonging to a family .  You wave at other wranglers and maybe a cherokee if its  cool enough lol,  If you seem another jeep on the side of the road you stop and help.  These are the things we should base this on.  We sell each other parts for cheep because the next guy or new guy needs them and we don't.  Someone will probably flame me for posting this, probably for poor grammar or spelling mistakes,  but if this site was more like that I would probably try and join.

Both of you have completely missed the point, which has been reiterated several times in this thread.

If you had paid attention to the majority of the posts in this thread, you would have noticed that the general concession is not flame newbs for being new. We help new people in here every day.

If you think we are to hard on newbies and this isnt "the community" for you, then maybe you should move to a kinder gentler board filled with sweet jeep love, where everyone gets along all the time and no one ever questions anyone on anything.

As for you tank, all I've seen you do in ten years of board existance is gossip with the rest of the 4 wheeler crowd. Taking holier then thou pot shots at the tech types around here doesnt really mean much coming from you........................

I think you missed my point Bnine. If you think I was taking "shots" at the "tech type" guys on here your wrong. I was not. Nor have I ever. Sorry if you saw it that way.  My "ultimate wheeler" comment was harsh(once I re-read it) and I also apoligize if I offended anyone besides Bnine.

As for your last and personal comment Bnine. All I can say is you have your opinion but I know I've helped others over the years. Most of those were newbs so you may not have read ALL my posts.

I don't wheel a big rig. I'm happy with a near stock Jeep. To me its more of a challenge.

What I liked most about your link spinal guy is that it brought me to google with a banner for "Busty Russians"! That's awesome and much more stimulating than this thread!  Thanks!

I like being harsh on the internet.  It helps me treat people better face to face.  If I don't take it out on people here it would be face to face and I'm trying to be a better person.

Although I'm pretty sure I may have been one of the people that asks stupid crap from time to time.  And I blame it on the fact that there's so much crap to read on Jeeps that by the end of the day I'm not sure if I've absorbed any more useful information and sometimes have to ask something simple to refresh myself.

Seriously though, when i learned that you could FIRST google any topic followed by the forum you were interested in finding the info from, it made my life so much easier especially when it comes to looking for tips regarding my KTM 950SER on ADVrider.

The hole " respect is earned not given " bugs me. I'm new to this forum (march/2011). but I'm not new to wheel n. I've been going to Waiparous and Mcclean since i was a kid I'm 38 now. I'm the newb here, but what does any one know of me or my experience. If I just bought a Jeep, I might have some "newb" questions. This forum is huge, it could take me along time to sift through the years of know how to get my answer. So I would probable ask my newb question right away. Sharing info is why I'm on CAJ. I have a post about splicing my ABS/ESP wires. I didn't know i could do it untill some one on a forum told me i could. So I passed it along.
I haven't had any disrespect or bad replies. I haven't had any replies. LOL. I would like to think we are all ON CAJ to make newb friends that we might meet on the trail and say HI to and maybe lend a hand if needed.

If any 'new' person here would just try searching FIRST before posting a question that has been asked a thousand times, than maybe respect would be given.

Google is amazing. If i google my question and add a + sign with Calgary Jeep following it, you will probably find the most commonly answered questions on this site.

Now after having done that and exhausted other google possibilities than one could ask the question here with a preamble like this:
Hi all, i'm new. i did search. i searched here, i searched google and i am still not satisfied with the info i found. i am hoping someone here could help me out OR direct me to a resource that will help me.
Great site by the way.
Thanks.

i would imagine the experience would be better. ;)

And for you as an example, please click this link ::)

No one is forcing anyone to reply to any posts.

What does that have to do with anything being discussed here? As both club and forum members it is our responsibility to maintain the integrity of this site.

That means if we see an idiot telling people to body lift their YJ with hockey pucks, it is our responsibility to dispell that type of crap so that other members on this board dont heed poor advice.

This is a club board that allows public use. It is a privilege to participate here. Not a right. That means people are expected to respect the commutity and what it stands for.

If you dont agree with the general ideals of the members here, then move on to another board that better suits you. Its that simple.

This is the internet. There's a site to suite everyone out there somewhere.

Reading your statement one would assume that you are saying its perfectly acceptable for anyone to come in here and act however they please. If that isnt to the liking of the long time board, and club members, well, we should just ignore those threads and let them continue.

Also, it really doesnt matter what anyone here thinks about earning respect. The fact will always remain that no matter the social situation, respect is always earned. Job, club, forum, school, sports team, competition, volunteering, etc etc.

Wether or not some of you care for that, is completely irrelevant.

10 - 4. I was at the last meeting, first timer. I was surprised at the number of real members, a bit low for the size of this city and area. I'm not sure when the club was established, but I'm sure it was awhile ago.  There are a few steps to be taken to join. For good reasons. My next step is to show up for a CJA rail ride. One that I have heard of and have wanted to be apart of for along time. The after May long clean up of  Mc lean. I always look forward to May long and no matter where I go, I make sure our camp site is clean before we leave. Any way, the clean up means a lot to me. So its time to get involved, meet some friends and give jeep n a good name.
The trail clean up of Mc lean is on sunday after the long weekend and as long as I don't have to work that day I'll be there !

Why the opposition to hockey puck body lifts? I have had one on my Tj for a couple of years now and no problems...sure we've all heard the "some guy I knew lifted his full size 70's ford with 4 hockey pucks stacked up and they cracked and failed so they suck" story (flexy frames and body lifts do not play well together in general), but on a Jeep with a more rigid frame I have heard many say they work fine for many years, in fact the only broken body lift I have ever seen was a commercially produced product from a major brand. Of all the examples you could give of "bad advice" I can't personnally see why this is a major worry.  I am not trying to start a debate, but I am honestly interested to hear what your concerns with Hockey puck BL's are.  As an experiment, I put approx. 10,000lb load onto a single hockey puck and left it like that for over a week. It looked exactlyu the same as before.

so, after you've spent say, 15$ on hockey pucks, 60$ on new grade 8 hardware and figured out a way to drop your radiator a few inches, why not just spend the extra 50$ on a whole kit that includes that stuff as well as other things that are pretty improtant, like steering adjustments, tcase linkage adjustments and a fuel filler extension?  is that not worth the 35$ you'd save?????

now you're defending the hockey puck body lift? you say you're not starting a debate, but every time you post something its a debate. hockey pucks are designed for hockey. ive personally shattered plenty of pucks playing hockey, and you figure its ok to use them as a body lift? what Bnine said is 100% correct. for those of us that know the difference between right and wrong, we do our best to teach others the same. sometimes it may not come out as smoothly as we'd like. but the proper idea is put forth. a lot of this info is for safety reasons. if you drive your jeep on the street or off road then it should be 100% safe for you, your passengers and other vehicles around you. good enough for you isnt good enough for everyone else.

Who can honestly say they have seen a hockey puck bl fail on a jeep? If you have, great, I'd love to hear how it failed, I am honestly interested.

Mel from 4 wheeler had a puck body lift on her 4 banger YJ at the clean up in about 06. She was riding on less then half her body mounts because all the pucks had cracked and fallen out.

Most people have never witnessed anyone blowing their own head off while cleaning a gun but we all know it has happened. Should we all look down rifle barrels now when we clean our guns?

Thats how frickin' stupid you sound right now.

Just because you havnt seen something stupid result in failure or injury, does not make it any less stupid.

The hate is not only for body lifts. Its for stupid mentalities like yours that just breeds more stupidity from other ignorant frickin' idiots that are to stupid to know any better.

You're a frickin' retard for even bringing this up again a year later. How you are still allowed on this board is completely beyond me. You add zero value, and have proven with your stupid arguements that you lack the capacity to understand the simplest frickin' concepts.

I'm with Bnine on this one and %100 agree with him
I dint understand why someone would want to rune there rig by putting in a BL you don't gain any ground clearance all u do is  throw ur rigs  center of gravity out to lunch ::)    wait i got it BL's make ur rig more flexy and give u room to run bigger tires I think aim going to put one on my ZJ  ::)
And one more think why would you want your rad lower so ya can hit it off crap and crack it I would rather have my rad up and out of the way not hangin out below the body just waiting for a rock/anything for that matter to hit it/ possible go right throw my rad as I'm driving down the hwy/ in the city.
Hockey pucks are for  hockey not for lifting ur friggin rig
