Canadian Tire is having a 70% off sale and one of the items is a 177-piece socket kit that usually goes for $349.99, its on sale for $99.99 and you get another $10 when you spend more than $50.

Pook has the same set so you can ask him anything about it.

It looks like a good deal HOWEVER....
CT has a habit of pricing things at a higher price for just the minimum amount of time required by law and then putting it on sale at a more reasonable price....gullible people go crazy when they hear of the deep discounts but the discounted price is the "real" price. Sears does the exact same thing and both companies have gotten some heat for it legally.
I talk to clients regularly who want my advice on buying treadmills. "should I buy the such and such at store a for $599? it's half price!!!" they ask... then I explain that no one is going to sell a $1200 product for $600....The sale price is a good deal but the regular price is just an inflated fantasy.
I would say that socket set is probably a good deal, as are most of the sale items at places like CT and Sears. Just don't let the percent off influence your desision too much as it is just something someone in marketing made up.
Anyone can say anything is the "regular price"...the question is, does anyone actually buy it at that price.

no they wait for these sales and buy them on sale.
that is, the guys the realize a good deal and jump on it. others will ponder your question, debate whether this sale is worth it, then miss out completely. hopefully those same people are kind enough to ask YOU if they can borrow your tools instead of buying their own.............
these will likely be gone by now anyways.

CT is great for rainchecks, if they are out of stock they will give you one so you can get the deal when they do have stock..

So Fraser says that it's a good deal, and then you post three paragraphs about Cambodian Tire's pricing strategy and say that it's a good deal. So far the total relevant contribution that you've made to this thread is "I would say that socket set is probably a good deal."
Thank you for confirming that you agree with something that was already posted. :)

my point is that the "regular" price has no bearing on whether or not it is a good deal. It is the price you actually pay that matters.
-
I hear that there's a great sale happening on aged pu er tea in China right now. 75% off of regular price.
-
yes Todd but that's the marked up price and its not as good of a deal as you think, just saying cause i like to see what i say in print, it makes me feel important.

Canadian tire also has huge buying power when it comes down to it! This means they negotiate big discounts on the cost of an item with suppliers/manufacturers because they buy so many more units then the next guy (auto value/rona/home depot/etc) and can sell the product way faster as well. Not to mention that Canadian Tire is the top known "Brand" name in Canada, meaning more people regonize the name and what it stands for then any other retailer and what Brand wouldn/t want to get on board with that kind of pull. Futhermore, Canadian tire runs a very tight turn (sales-to-inventory ratio) and if they can not liquidate old product they seek out discounts form the vendor indicating they will not be able to buy as much of "Next Years Tools" becuase they have to many of "This Years Tools" in stock. No brand wants this, as it will destroy their margin, and upcoming fiscal season. Finally, Canadian tire would be foolish to increase the market cost of any product as this would affect their bottom line until the time that they are able to mark down said product. This would jeoprodize their ability to purchase "in-season" goods that are out performing projected sales targets, therefore being reactionary to the market.
Bottom Line, I wish I had $100 to go an buy that set!!!
-
Maybe they will hold one for you? ;)

find it,
its easier than borrowing other peoples tools.
if you've got money for lifts and axles and tires and winch plates then you can find 100$ to buy some tools to install those parts. that is, unless you just want to stare at them in your garage..........
you have a credit card, go use it ;)

I bought it. It is not as good as my signet set, but it was half the price and included a 1/2" drive set too. At the end of the day, it's still good bang for your buck. $350 for that set would be a ripoff in my honest opinion.

Got my rain check...

Looks like more over priced tools are on sale again this week at RIDICULOUS saving :o :o
-
Thanks for the heads-up Black YJ!

Ok first off if you are gonna start talking business................know your crap.
Home depot did 68 billion in sales in 2010 vs CT's 8 billion.............yes that is billion........as in 68,000,000,000 vs 8,000,000,000.
So if you think that CT has more buying power than HD well then la tête dans le cul.
Also if you look at Stanley/BlackandDeckers annual report you will see that they did 8 billion in revenue as well................yup 8,000,000,000................notice a similarity...........that's correct the company that you are saying is concerned that CT will not buy as much of "Next Years Tools" does the same (actually a little bit more as I am rounding to the nearest billion) as its buyer. So given the relative percentage of its annual volume Stanley Black and Decker could give a frack what CT thinks. There contribution to there bottom line is about as much as you contribute to McDonald's bottom line when you upsize your fries.
Inventory turn.............seriously????
C'mon is that a term you learned in university???? Seriously this is a company that has a CB radio on their site as current inventory that was built in 2007 and has been disco`d to the point were the manufacturer does not provide info on it for their website...........Cobra 19DX III.
Don`t get me wrong.................I love me some CT and they have great sales. but to make this about CT having buying power and pushing vendors like Stanley/Black&Decker around............not how it works.................
Simply put.............Stanley had a surplus of these units...........was changing their packaging/branding/marketing and told CT...............if you want to carry next years product then blow these out for us at this $$$$$.
And Stanley/Black&Decker didn`t even try that with Home Depot..................whey...............well I guess at $70 billion (round numbers) Stanley/Black&Decker thought Home Depot couldn`t help them out.
As for adding AutoValue into the mix.................they are a Calgary based company that`s like comparing Shaw Cable to NBC.......................cuz afterall 4 billion is closed to 70 billion.
Before you talk $hit.................make sure your audience doesn`t have a clue.
having said that.................just cuz CT was blowing out old stock for Stanley.........doesn`t mean it isn`t a good product at a good price.
Hmmmph............buying power my arse.

Morons who have no idea what they are talking about! ``
hmmph.......

This argument is gay. Buy good tools and learn to use them..you guys seem to know the numbers but nothing worthy when it comes to actually turning a wrench..enough with your crap arguements . Seems we have a lot of math wiz kids and biz kids argueing over cheap tools niether know how to use.
Maybe invest in time spent using them instead of argueing over their price.
-
I almost went and bought one myslef, but why buy when you can borrow :-[)
-
Hey Shawn, I'm pretty sure I was refering specifically to Canadian companies, that is why I said "It is the number one known company in CANADA"! Unless the number you are quoting are in CND dollars for Home Depot's annual revenue then your entire rant is moot. Furthermore, I wish univeristy taught me about this stuff, it took me working for another large Canadian retailer who just got bought by CTC to figure all this out. All univeristy is good for is to show the world you are willing and able to learn, whether or not what you are learning is important is another conversation all together....
