Title: Aug 23
Post by: w squared on August 18, 2008, 08:23:49 AM
So...who's planning on a Saturday run this weekend?

I have to drive to Edmonton on Sunday, but I'd like to get in a last day of getting dirty prior to heading back to work  ;D

I'm planning on getting out to the Falls in Waiprous one more time before the trail closes Sept1st.....maybe Meadow Creek  or Lost Knife as well ????????
Title: Re: Aug 23
Post by: w squared on August 18, 2008, 11:08:32 AM
That would be new territory for me, as I've only been out to McLean creek so far. I'm running a stock 4 door JK Rubicon...will I slow you down?

The other question I have is....if we're likely to get into ugly muddy stuff, is there someone with a winch? Tow straps are good for the odd tug, but there's no substitute for a good winch when things get ugly.

Well, our family day is Sunday, so the Nickster and I would perhaps be game to go out, since that' s a trail I may never have been down, or it's been a few years and I'd love to get 'er done before it closes.

w squared & Shearcon....Waip/Ghost would make for a good run for you. Little bit of everything, but nothing stupidly outrageous.
Out to the Falls from Meadow creek, would invole some climbing, river crossings, possibly some mudholes ( if we get some rain) , rocks etc.
Plan on lunch (bbq) style at the falls, and we could even hit Margret lake on the way back. If weather permits go topless as the scenery towards the Falls is awsome !!! ;)
Pat...you got that overheating problem solved ??? ???
Title: Re: Aug 23

Pat...you got that overheating problem solved ??? ???

The only overheat problem was due to that stupid temperature sensor having backed out of the rad.

I haven't put silicone on the tip of the sensor to keep it in place yet. It only seems to back out on the trail, but I'll have it on by the weekend :)  I was working on the manual override switch to the module today... I can set it for ON (full-blast), OFF (for water crossings) and AUTO (the way it runs without the override switch).

I'll toss more gear in for the longer run tho... like a tent, sleeping bags, lots more water... super soaker etc. hehe..

Seems liek a reasonable group coming together :)

How long a day are we looking at here? I'm thinking that I may be bringing a couple of off-road novices with me as passengers, and I want to make sure that it is a positive experience for them...not excessively long.

No repeats of our last Fisher East run  :o

We can either meet up at Smitty's in Cochrane around 9am, or the Gravel pit off the trunk road........we could do Meadow Creek trail, up to the Falls (stop for lunch), Margret lake and you will still be home for supper !!!

saturday may work for me also, i'd be up for meeting at the smity's in cochrane.

so i went to the dealership, and they said the reason i was over heating, was due to mud between the rad and condenser. they wanted to charge me $200 to clean it. I told them i would clean it my self, and they looked at me like i was crazy. I looked at them and said all i need is a water hose, a chair, and 30 mins. They must of thought, what a stupid kid. LOL

Hey all,
a fellow jeeper from Ontario that moved to NWT is coming into town this week.
i work Saturday but i know he would love to go wheelin and especially see the route you guys/gals are taking.
He has transportation to a meeting place in Cochrane.
Is there anyone that would let him be a passenger? He has high recommendations as a good guy from the Jeepkings website out of Ontario.
He will be staying at my place this weekend.
Let me know, it would be a highlight for him, for sure.
Thanks
Tom

Boring because we are not allowed on any of the good trails anymore. >:( :'(
This is also why I have I have begun to do more wheelin in Mclean myself....One of my fave old routes was to enter from Hunter valley, run the cabin creek trail into the back way to Margret lake. It's a chew even for guys on quads.......I ran into some a few weeks back and they didn't believe a Jeep could go through there.. ::) Little do they know !!  :o

Hahaha, if Rubi can deal with my tiny JK X stock tires, I'm sure you'll do fine.  Let's just say I MIGHT have lead to 3 out of 4 rigs getting stuck......
---
Oh, alternator's getting replaced under warranty, but when I talked to them today they wanted to change out the diff fluid.  Which is reasonable until I asked the dollar amount..... $350!!!!!!!!!!  I had to get her to repeat it to be sure I heard her right.  I replied politely I'd do it myself.  As some of you may have noticed electrical systems aren't my thing, but mechanics I can do.  Especially compared to $350.
---
Tinkerer:  Tried to pick up a supersoaker, Toys-R-Us is sold out of water guns!  I can't go this weekend but if I was I'd definitely ask for you to bring it....

Title: Re: Aug 23
Post by: Tinkerer on August 21, 2008, 06:39:13 AM
Where are you?  I'm in the NE (if you dare come up here)... and have my own (Radio Shack) SWR meter etc.   How bad is your SWR?  Unless it's going to burn up the radio, we don't tend to use them for long distances on the trails :D

Let me know, I'm planning on being home tonight.

I'll PM Contact info.

If you can't arrange to hook up with tinkerer, I'll gladly lend you a not-so-expert hand. I've only ever tuned one antenna, but I was able to get myself into the 2.0 SWR range. I'll be out on Saturday, so we can tune it up during a stop and then test while running.

Title: Re: Aug 23
Post by: RUBI on August 21, 2008, 07:03:12 PM
Once we get through meadow creek trail, and cross the river...you can decide to carry on, or take the trail out to thr Trunk road..........choice is yours.
Price of a handheld is almost as much as cab mounted unit..FRS will work also....but neither is mandatory. Stick to the middle of the wagon train and ur ok. Nobody gets left behind anyways !!! :)
Title: Re: Aug 23

If I get my "stuff" together (family forum), I'll bring my 2 handheld CB's with 12V power cords and 2-4 FRS radios.   I now have my built-in CB installed as well as my VHF/UHF Ham Radio.

I'm tempted to take tomorrow off to prepare for the trip... just to make sure we have what we need in case of an extended stay.  I still don't have my super-soaker :)

Should be interesting after all the rain!

What I was thinking was McLean Creek with a little later of a start say meet at the store at 10am and the head out as soon as we are ready. Z you where saying that you would like to rerun the trail we did for 101, I was thinking was running it backwards and then go to the falls for lunch and then pick another trail. Z , you still have the option to bail at the 1/2 way point ,
its an easy road out from the falls/lake junction - you'd
be home early afternoon like 2 or 3 maybe earlier ...

squared was thinking same I think ... you could hike out together,
its a hard road that runs alongside the river - hard to get lost ...

the falls run is a nice leg of the journey though ... you'll want to do it at
some point ... your rubi is more than upto the task  :)

Actually, plans are shifting around a bit, and I will probably hang tough for the whole run as long as it's not turning into a winch-fest (I still have flashbacks to Fisher East)

If I am home for the 6 or 7 ball park, it's all good.

Will see, i haven't got around to cleaning it, but it doesn't over heat with the AC on anymore, so my guess is that the dealership did some kind of clean.

But just in case that it does over heat. The DOORS are coming off tomorrow. ;D

I made it all the way to some lake after the river crossing. Then it was getting late, so we turned around. But its all pretty easy stuff. Didn't even come close to getting stuck.

Thanks to everyone for their help, I'm going to swap in U-joints tomorrow, look at the ball joints and TRE's as well.  I managed to get the Jeep back to Smitty's before the vibe became too much to safely drive and I had it loaded on a flatdeck and taken home.

Whoever has the pics of me doing the river crossing can you email them to me please? [email protected]

Front or back ??? I had a front U-Joint on the driveshaft drive me almost crazy like that before............and if it's any consolation I had to put new rear pads on the Rube as they were toast !!! 56,000km and gone...funny tho, as the front are still at 70% or so  ???

Thats a long way to squeak a bad ujoint. If you can, change it before you go or it may cost you a LOT.

x 2  on the cange it NOW comment , better than el busto on the way  & the associated grief or potential for additional $$$$ , towing , etc.

x3.  Cheaper to get a new u-joint then a new T-Case just ask elsifer & bnine . DSI could probably get that fixed in 1/2 a day if you tell them you need it right away.

or just take it off at the diff and tie it up good. DONT use 4wheel drive. than take it off in kelowna and fix it. thats if you dont want to fix it first.  witch i would so you dont have to worrie about it any more.
