33's and 3.73's with I6 5spd?

I find I just can't let the thought of 33's go.  I try and I try but, .... well most of you know my dilemma.

I can afford the 33's as long as a regear and SYE upgrades aren't necessary.

The SYE is not a problem with small BB and BL.  However the gearing thing is still a concern

For those who jumped to 33's with 3.73's please educate me.  I have no interest in the implications for wheeling.  My only concern is the real highway performance with 10.5 wide rubber.

On Hwy 2 can I use 5th at 120 klicks, downshifting for grades is no issue, I drive to Grande Cache in 4th most of the way.  I don't pay for my gas, company does.  My cruising speeds are 120 on 4 lanes 110 on 2 lanes.

On all the forums it seems the wheelers are very negative of the combo.  While daily drivers don't see it as a big issue. 

I'm buying rubber this week and need to put this to rest.  thanks for all input.

I'm running 12.5X35's with 3.54 ratio with a 4.2L  I6engine in my '88 YJ.  I have no problem doing 120km on hiway ( 5th has become a gear that collects dust though) 110km @2300 rpm in 4th(110km@1400 in 5th) and can go wheeling with no problem either, so 33's and 3.73 should not be a big issue, your speedo will be showing slower than you are traveling but your rpm's should be similar to mine mine.  Hope this helps  good luck

it'll be tolerable but not great.  a 33x10.5" tire should be ok tho
~ rescue green JKUR on 35s.  typical rubicon build

im running 33's with 4.10 gears 5 speed and  i cant get into 5th gear unless im on a perfectly flat highway with no wind  .

my brothers running 33's with 3.73 gears but he had a 6 speed and doesnt have a problem

Is your rig a lot heavier from stock?  Mine is a light rig, hardtop in the winter but usually no back seat and no addons.

no its stock   hard top , back seat, small tool box 10lbs max

Interesting! I carry around 50lbs. of gear when I travel. Suitcase, recovery stuff, some tools, etc..

well come to think about it i carry the little tool box  high lifter jack and tow rope .. so max 50 lbs

 but ya i cant seem to get over 110 km . so no i drive in 4th at 95 - 100 km which is about 108 km with the tire difference

I'm currently running 3.73 and 33" X 12.5"  tires and 5th gear is completely gutless on the highway...the slightest little grade or headwind and I'm shifting down to 4th. I bought 4.88 gears that are going in my jeep in about 2 weeks... ;D can't wait!

Thanks everyone.  I do not want to be robbed of my rigs snappy performance.  I'll shelve the 33's idea  :'( and get a nice set of 31 MT's.  I am leaning heavy to the Firestone Destination MT's.

I can tell now that the 33 / 3.73 combo will make me very unhappy when I carry the family for family outings.

have you considered 32x11.5   they work well for me for daily driving and wheeling.   i have 3.55 gears, 4.0 and a 5 speed and still get it up for passing on the highway.

The weight of the tire will be almost as important as the size for your application.

Most likely, the best tire for you would be a 32 x 11.50 or a 33 x 10.50 BFG all terrain. They are exceptionally light weight, have good road manners, and are agressive enough for you ventures onto leases and what not.

Those are about the only two size and tire types I would be looking at for you.

Due to the lower first gear, and lower overdrive, either of those tires will be very manageable on the highway.
