JK Work / Opinions
« on: May 03, 2009, 11:51:33 PM »
Borrowed the cousin-in-law's driveway this weekend and got some parts swapped out.  Most of the shocks/coils were easy to do.  The passenger side front shocks was cross-threaded from the factory so that took a while to worm off with a snipe.  Put on a new heavy duty steering stabilizer to absorb some more bumps, and replaced the sway links that I wonked up with a quick disco set.  Also touched up some rust, and painted all my wheel's center caps black, I hate chrome.  Put the wheel spacers back in too.

Am sourcing out a powder coater tomorrow, if anybody can rush my fenders through this week I should be able to install them this Friday for the run.  Which would be nice, both my fronts are close to popping right off.

Anybody torn out the interior (seats, carpet, center console) of a JK before?  I want to Herculine the interior sometime this summer so I can run no carpets and top down all summer, and not have a stinky soggy mess all the time.  Then I can keep the carpets in decent condition and huck them back in every winter to keep it warm.

Want opinions on this.  Should I bust out the money to re-gear my Dana 30 and 44, or should I just wait until I can afford some D60's and just keep these things alive for a few years?

You can probably talk to Blair about stripping the interior since hes doing to his TJ this month, shouldn't be toooo different.  As far as axles, I'd stay with the 30/44 combo (I assume 4:10 gears), save for 60's and the stuff to go along with it and do it all at the same time.

The Currie 60's are such a good deal its insane. I would make them live until you can do Curries. The cost now of re gearing and upgrading your existing axles would pay for the rear 60 alone.

There's a pretty detailed write-up on bedlining your interior over on JK-Forums. I'm giving some pretty serious thought to doing the same for this summer myself.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

I was a Trim tech at Tower Chrysler. interiors are easy to remove, just a little time consuming. I have installed new carpets, headliners, and re-upholsterd many seats in jeeps.  If you have any questions dont hesitate to ask.

The Currie 60's are such a good deal its insane....

I'm kind of torn between the Currie and Solid setups.  Found either to be a better product?  Bearings, shafts, housings brackets, etc....?  I did want to have OX lockers installed, but apparently with the D60's front housings the control arm mount is on the diff cover, which means I can't use the OX cover which I believe is required for their system - not 100% on that though.  Guess I could always get them to send the bracket separately and get a few rods for welding on cast and just weld the mount to the cover.

Yeah, I've read about the Herculiner, which is what I was thinking of doing.  I don't think I'd want to know what some of the Line-X or Rhino Liner sprayers in Calgary would charge for having to strip out and mask the interior.  If they can charge over a grand for a truck bed....
I'm probably going to get some ordered in pretty quick, am torn between the gray and the black though.  I can't find any pics of actual applications of the gray to see how it looks.  If I do it first want to lend a hand?  Then we can get both get it figured out.

My only real concern is the center console portion.  I've gutted a few cars for stereo installs for my dad (corvettes where always the worst).  Just remove the shifter handle and undo the screws?  Or is it more involved then that.  I know with some vehicles you more or less have the remove the entire front console to lift the center one out.  Car seats might just require me to "break" the bolts with an impact wrench at work.  I've heard some JK's seat bolts are easy and one guy ended up borrowing a 3/4" impact to get a few loosened.

that is the jist of it for removing the center console. dont forget the transfer case shifter light, and any power outlets connected to the console. the dash center bezel may need to come off to create the clearance for the console.
