mirror laws?
« on: May 29, 2009, 09:31:32 PM »
i got pulled over today for just a check stop had my doors in the back seat. The cop told me i had no side mirrors, so i told "ya i do there right there" as i pointed at the back set. im glad he laughed lol. Any way he told me he wasnt 100% that i needed them and told me i should have side mirrors any way then let me go. so i just threw the doors on right there just to show alittle respect.

I'm not 100% sure either but from what I understand ,  having the mirror on the windshield is all that is required to be  legal.

What is it with Red Deer Jeepers and check stops? I guess you guys just don't have enough gang wars to keep your police busy.

#1. Good thinking about putting the door on. IT shows him that you take what he's saying seriously. If you KNOW that he's wrong then you can  get any ticket he issues overturned. If you're not sure, you probably made the right choice.

#2. Good on him for not trying to issue a ticket when he thought but wasn't sure that you should have a side mirror.

#3. You can probably find a motorbike mirror at Ukranian tire that will fit into the hinge that your door mounts on and PRESTO you have a mirror for running doorless.

Mirrors with 5/16" stems fit our hinges. Harley Davidson mirrors work .

my understanding of the law as I was taught in my Motorbike training was that the only manditory Mirror on a Vehicle is the Drivers side mirror. that is why the proper place to be in the lane on a motorbike is driver side of the lane as you will have the most visibility there.

And confirmed by the RCMP in Sylvan when I checked with them.  Driver's side mirror is a MUST.

Case in point....although the passenger seat could be ordered as an option way back then because they were mainly used as a tractor in a lot of cases, the old willys jeeps even had a driver's side mirror.

Thanks, I'll take the check stops, please.   ;D

Hmmm....so rear view only is okay....long as the windshield isn't down. lol

Not that I'd remove mine from the willys....I actually like having it there.

i like the side mirrors dont get me wrong, but i find that not having them i HAVE to shoulder check, and i actually have less close calls. because when i have a mirror there i see no 1 is there and  subconsisly start lane chaning as i shoulder check. we if i have no mirror i make sure no 1 is there. thats just me and my habbits tho

How many times must I post this link?   By now it should be in a sticky.

http://www.qp.alberta.ca/574.cfm?page=2002_322.cfm&leg_type=Regs&isbncln=0779719557

This is from the Alberta Traffic Safety Act, so therefore so long as the mirror on your windshield is NOT obstructed (mine is by the larger spare tire etc.), then you do NOT need any additional mirror, drivers side or otherwise.

That makes it pretty clear. Thanks!

All I would say in addition to that is that if you're stopped by a cop that's having a bad day, telling him that you've read the highway traffic act isn't going to prevent him from issuing a ticket. Cops can't be experts in every part of every law, and sometimes they may operate based on what they've heard from co-workers or a mistaken understanding.

If it looks like you're going to get a ticket for something that you know isn't illegal, just be polite, accept the ticket, and show up to your court date with a paper copy of the relevant section of the highway traffic act. If the officer even bothers to show up, they'll be embarrassed when the judge quashes it.

So I guess they can get you for having your windshield down if you don't have side mirrors either.

Yup. Looks like you beed to have both wing mirros if you don't have a center mirror.

I've got a relocation bracket that puts my driver's side wing mirror up on the A pillar, so that side is taken care of for me. I just haven't put the right side bracket on because the "re-located" mirror location reduces the amount of the mirror that I can see. Maybe I should look into geting a mirror that will slide into the passenger side hinge bracket for the odd time that I run doorless.

I bit my tongue on this earlier because I like you...but after reading a thread that you posted elsewhere, I have to say this.

If you have already noticed that you are having close calls because you're not spending the half-second required to shoulder check because you're looking in your wing mirror instead, the solution is not to shrug your shoulders and take your mirror off. The solution is to find a driving teacher and take a basic class.

The company I work for has a substantial fleet, and we require people to complete a combined defensive driving course/driving assessment before they are allowed to drive one of our vehicles. People who don't shoulder check aren't allowed to drive. Period.

I have to agree i just got my learners a while ago and i dont trust my mirrors because as it states "objects in mirror are closer then they appear" ill check the mirror to see if theres a car then and then shoulder check quickly to move over but i wont rely on jut my mirrors
