You need a 42RE (auto) or an AX-15 (manual)

could  aslo be a AW4 ..... if the shifter bezel shares one position for 1 and 2 gears it is an AW4,  otherwise probably a 42re.   Standard  trannies in ZJ are rare ( 93 models )

AW4 is the only automatic shared with the ZJ and only in the first part of '93. I doubt your '94 has one. You are stuck with getting another one out of a ZJ with a 4.0L.

Fixing yours may not be too bad. Is it slipping or not upshifting?

I have faith that I can edit myself to stay relatively family friendly.

Ru Paul is probably to tall to fit well in to ZJ, but most other trannies would work well.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

An AW4 can be swapped in apparently.  google it, and there is a writeup on mallcrawlin.com about how to do it. its a straight in swap it looks like..........the 42RE you need came in 93 - early 2000 ZJs and WJs with the 4.0L.  good luck finding one. they are rare........ (at least in good shape!)

42RE - 93 to early 99 are all the same and can be used, the late 99 and on are all 42RE's but you cannot use this transmission due to the torque converter and valvebody being different.

As for swapping in the AW4 Trans, this should be fairly easy swap to do as you have the OBDI computer/electronics..

P.S.
I was the one who sent a reply to your wanted ad on kijiji stating the above sentence.
cheers!

Now that I think about this more, there is going to be an issue with the input shaft length on the t-case if he grabs a trans from anything different from a 93-95 correct? Also, keeping in mind the gear cut change in 95, can someone shed some light on this?

Also, what has been done thus far to determine that a new trans is required?
How's the fluid? ATF4 is being used correct?

***Edit***

As I suspected... I hope this helps..

FIRST OFF I KNOW QUESTION SOUNDS STUPID
second no im not the one from pnp
third  i cant get my truck to go faster than 80 other than going down hill it seems to shift fine if you try to accelerate it just revs to 4 thou rpm i have checked the fluid is brown and stinks
i also tried the cruise controll to get upto 100 but she just revs higher
i have also done a flush and added lucas anti slip and used atf+4 like your supposto no change
like i said i can get a tranny but its out of an 89 cherokee but was told its not the same and wont work
but noone knows the reason exactly
i was also told the only one i could use was 42re from the 93 to 98 grand cherokee
i have also been offered one from a 92 was told it will work as long as i have the 4 liter
this 42 re is a challange to find as it seems they all have the same problem
i also found an article saying this was a toyota trans? beats me
the more i can learn and figure out the better

XJ=Regular Cherokee(aka Baby cherokee)
ZJ=Grand Cherokee

XJs use the AW4 tranny(which is also used in some Toyota Supras, good luck finding one from a Toyota). It was also used in ZJs ONLY in  early '93. Its not what you have in yours and will not swap in without changing other stuff. Its a computer controlled tranny and your Jeep doesn't have the computer or wiring to support it. Most of the custom AW4 swaps I've heard of don't retain the computer and go to a full manual shift setup. Matching t-case and driveshafts may also be required to swap in an AW4.

Sounds like your tranny isn't upshifting past 2nd or 3rd gear. This could be a problem in the valve body and not require a whole new tranny. I suggest consulting a tranny shop.

For a direct swap you will need a 42re tranny from a ZJ.  ZJs were only made from '93-98. A '92 would be an XJ and have an aw4.

Thanks for clearing that up Clay as I'm just learning about the 4.0 as we go along here..
ALL 4.0 ZJ's 93-98 (with the exception of early 93) used the same 42RE transmission, however with different output shafts to fit different transfer case input shaft lengths. So depending on the length of the shafts will permit a direct swap or not, but you could always swap the one from your old trans. You can also use the early 99 42re but this will be harder to find.
