thank you for the clairification
i just went through all this with my dad he just bought a 97 off kijiji that needed a tranny thy guy had one to go with it but it is out of a 93 so it will work for my gc but not his  so i will see what happens here shortly
also with my trans in my gc when i pulled the pan there was some bigger shaveings in there which leads me tro believe there is a bigger issue other than the valve body but i plan to take it in once i get it out will keep you posted
on this whole thing i found a shop that will rebuild the tranny for 1200 but the rebuild kit to buy is way less wondering if i should tear into this my self and see how smart i am lol  i found exploded views of tranny on line here doesent look to bad

Why didn't it work for your Dad's jeep?

Note that the 4.0L and 5.2L use different bell housing patterns and thus the trannys are not interchangable.

The tranny is computer controled, the TPS(Throttle Position Sensor) tells the tranny how much throttle is being applied. At full throttle(foot to the floor) the tranny computer holds off the upshift for as long as possible. IF the TPS was bad and showing full throttle all of the time it would have delayed upshifts and touchy downshifts.

'93 ZJs are OBDI and the tranny computer doesn't talk to the engine computer and does not give error codes.

Plugged catalytic converter. The hissing is coming out of your EGR or an exhaust leak.

well just cut the cat off today but havent got a chance to go for a spin yet so we will see
also that cherokee my dad bought is a 97 the trans that came with it was suposidly from a 93 will work on his jeep
his origional trans has the 4 plug inside as does the other one  so my question is why r the shafts different on the tail the sp;ine on one goes right to the end the other does not ? we tested to see if t case goes on and it does ? seen a article where it says it wont but it does also his is the awd one not the 4x4 so kind of confused bout some info on here i need more input on this stuff any info helps we r going to put the trans in tommorow so we will see what happens i guess

When my cat plugged up the insides broke up and traveled down to the muffler and plugged up the muffler. Shine a flashlight into the muffler and see how it looks as well. Or just take it for a spin with the exhaust open and see how it does.

'93 ZJs are obd 1 and a '97 is obdII. That is the only reason I can think of for the wiring/electronics to be different. If you are swapping a tranny from a 4.0 into a 4.0(regardless of year) the output shafts should be the same. But I was of the understanding that a OBDI tranny wouldn't swap into an OBDII system and vice versa.

My experience is mostly with the V8 though. If you find differently let me know.

If you took the cat off you need to reinstall a new one.  I had mine off and it made the Jeep run like crap.

Was there an O2 sensor in it? If so then the O2 sensor needs to be put back into the system. Usually the cat is replaced with a straight pipe that has a bung on it for a O2 sensor.

Some friends of mine had a TJ that they cut the cat off years ago and didn't do anything with the O2 sensor, they always complained about poor mileage. Finally they got a muffler shop to put a bung in and a sensor. Mileage came back up as well they reported a power increase as well.

Good to hear that was the problem. As soon as you said it made a hissing sound it sounded off alarm bells in my my head.

Had a similar problem years ago with my XJ. Was on a trip to Montana and couldn't get over 80km/h and fuel mileage was horrible. Found the EGR completely melted out and tons of back pressure escaping thru the port. Pulled into a campground for a night and pulled off the exhaust and found the insides of the cat in the muffler. Next morning drove to Crowsnest with the muffler strapped to the roof and had a new system put on, sans the CAT. All was good and trip resumed. Fortunately my XJ was a stick so I new it wasn't the tranny.
