Tranny Down :(

so my trannsmission is pooched and looking for some opinions on a few things

1)is it worth putting in a new one i do have the money
2)does offroading bring the lifespan of a transmission down
3)is there any "Better" transmissions i can get for offroading

and i drive a 99 TJ

any thoughts would help its a hard decision for me right now.

What's wrong with it exactly ?

I'd get it re-built, I've installed a used tranny before, only to find out that it was much more "used" then the one I'd just pulled out

not worth getting a new one.  many horses are real cheap and with tow points.. well just need the leather straps

better reassess your questions.
2) yes. offroading kills parts.  especially transmissions with water in them.
3) yes. but all are prone to the same kinds of maintenence issues caused from offroading.
1) depends. are you going to do the same thing that killed the first tranny?  whats wrong with your tranny now?


if you have grown to love wheeling, time to start learning routine maintenence and general repairs..... otherwise it will get costly.

Swing by Dominion Automatic on Macleod and 58th, they are great guys and will take a look and give you a quote for free.  They do all the CPS work and a fair bit of lifted vehicles.

yep Al at Calgary Muffler (right next door) sent me to Dominion. Jim looked things over on my motorhome, made an adjustment for FREE

What question you did not answer is, what kind of tranny, auto or manual?

it is a manual transmission and they are calling me back tommorow to tell me what is wrong with it exactly but all they said today was that when they opened it it had silver fluid coming out.

anotherquestion is ifi were to ge a new/used tranny what are the possibilities of me putting it in myself i have all the tools and a friend that will do it with me and has some experience is this realistic?
or would it be better to have a mechanic to do this?

im looking at new ones for me to install and the best looking one so far that i have read into would be the NV4500
it is fully synchronized except reverse what does this mean?

It would be more cost effective for you to ditch the idea of acquiring a NV4500. They are not cheap or plentiful. There are also two versions of this tranny that were offered by Dodge and Chev(mt8). I believe a bellhousing adapter plate must be used for your application.Just get yours repaired!

You and a semi-skilled friend can do this job in a day(good way to learn about your rig) and cheaper. Now would be a good time to replace/upgrade your clutch. A hoist and trans jack would be helpful; but can be accomplished  with tall jackstands and the proper tools.

Get your old transmission repaired and do the install yourself. A used trans may have some issues with it, and would be a PITA to find out the hard way.

silver fluid does not sound good, considering it is supposed to be red.  your tranny is an AX-15 correct? there is one for sale on here. maybe get that, throw it in, and look at having your tranny rebuilt.... but keep in mind, tranny fluid doesn't just change colour, figure out what you did to blow your tranny (sounds like water got in. thats why your fluid looks like chocolate milk)  and don't do that again;) otherwise anything you do is futile!

alrighty so the most recent news is that i probably most likley need new bearings and synchro
 to rebuild im getting estimates for about $2400

my other problem is that my front hub bearings are "loose" and about to go and also my front u joint
this has been estimated at my shop for 1250 with labour and everything
also at my shop i can get a used transmission for $1554 installed and everything making the cost at my shop with all fixing and installation $2800

the only thing that i am nervouse about is the fact that this new used transmission only has a 90 day warrenty

and im pretty sure its the ax-5 i could be wrong its running off the 2.5l 4 cyl
