steering fluid lost

I noticed my steering was getting noisy. when i checked the level there was ummmm... NONE  :?

i filled it up drove it home and noticed fluid leaking by my steering gear box . I thought it would be my pump but it seems fine.

any suggestions on what approach i need to rectify this problem other then cracking eggs :shock:  into my jeep would be greatly appriciated ...

Shampoo your engine area off, get all existing leaked oil cleaned from around where you think the power steering system is leaking.  Take it for a drive, see where the new oil is that leaked out, and theres your problem.  Probably just a power steering hose, no biggie.

I don't know what you drive, but TJ's are known to leak from the seal at the bottom of the steering box where the pitman arm connects.  I replaced mine with a Grand Wagoneer early 80's vintage steering box.

that is exactly where mine is leaking from too. replacement seems to be best option as it is a cronic problem with the stock box????

The stock box is ok, but for larger tires it may be underpowered. I have heard (and someone will need to confirm this). That a same year Durango streering box is a direct bolt in fit. Bigger and beefier so I have heard.

Your milage may vary.

sorry, i have an 01 tj with 35 pro comp x terrains

that would be great if i could do a direct swap with a durango
let me know about this im gonna check the price of a durango box ...i think my nieghbor owns a durango he wouldn't miss his .

my shop has qouted me $500 to go with an aftermarket box ...as they are covering the cost of the fix they would put the aftermarket one in for free

If rackman is around he'd be better to get info from, he's local and somone who's actually done.

IIRC you need a 1999-2002 durango box out of a V8
