4L pilot bearing

in the middle of my engine swap.  now, i'm not sure what engine came out of the YJ, but i'm pretty sure its actually a 91 engine/tranny.  the pilot bushing in there is one of these guys https://www.quadratec.com/products/52008_00.htm

picked one up at Canadian tire today but it just wouldn't go.  am i missing something?   the engine came out of fugs 96 XJ.  am i missing something?  the pilot bearing above fits on the transmission just fine, but i can't hammer it into the crank; its a hair to big.  think it was just defective?  (i also have a pilot bearing for a 96XJ but it doesn't fit.)
any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Even tried putting the pilot bearing in the freezer and heating up the crank. would not go in.

right about now i'm debating parting it out.

where's the old pilot bearing for the engine?  might be able to swap the little inner bearing with the outer casing.   it's pretty much what I had to do.

You hitting it with a hammer? or something like a socket over it to keep it straight?

The 5-speed manual transmission is the light-duty Peugeot BA10/5 in the '87-'89.5 4.0 XJ, the medium duty Aisin-Warner AX15 in the '89.5-'99 4.0 XJ, and the medium-duty New Venture Gear NVG3550 in the '00-'01 4.0 XJ. When carrying out engine swaps (either another 4.0 or a stroker), selection of the correct pilot bearing can be a headache. The details below will make choosing a pilot bearing simple:

'87-'89.5 BA10/5:

OEM pilot bearing 33004041 for '87-'91 4.0 engine
Advance Adapters pilot bushing 716120 for '92-'04 4.0 engine
*Upgrade transmission to AX15 or NVG3550 for stroker engine swap*

'89.5-'91 AX15:

OEM pilot bearing 33004041 for '87-'91 4.0 engine or stroker
Advance Adapters pilot bushing 716120 for '92-'04 4.0 engine

'92-'99 AX15 and NVG3550:

OEM pilot bearing 53009180AB for '87-'91 engine or stroker
OEM pilot bearing 53009180AB or 53009181 for '92-'04 4.0 engine.

That's funny, I was just about to post this info.  I found it on Greatlakes4x4.com. It sounds like you need A.A. 716120 bushing, unless I'm mistaken. $23.91 on their website.

now that i see the pic i know what you've got. i had this issues long time ago. i took the pilot bearing to a machine shop and they shaved it down a girls-junk-hair thickness. and it fit fine.

A couple of years ago I swapped an AX15 from a 98 ?  TJ  into my 88 YJ which happens to have a 258 crank from a 70? something ? CJ and a 93   4.0  block.

A pilot bearing does not exist for the application described above.

What do I do in situations like this ?


I make one , a bushing does the job just fine .

In your  situation , you may be able to buy one , measure the bore in the end of the crank ( if it's still round ) , measure the pilot shaft

I didnt read all of it, but the pilot bushing changed in 93-94 john. Get the one specific to your year of crank and you will be good.

Nevermind, i see serge nailed it, and the change was 92-93.
