I don't know what other platforms Chrysler puts that engine into (Heeps would know...care to chime in?), bu it sure ain't a "truck" engine. It needs to rev higher than the 4.0 before it starts producing a respectable amount of torque. Then again, it will handle higher revs far better than the 4.0.
I would far rather have an inline six in my Jeep, but I understand why I've got what I've got. I didn't buy my Jeep to achieve high speeds on the highway... or to climb mountain passes without downshifting.
If you seriously want a significant performance increase over what the stock engine offers, then save your shekels and get a blower or do a hemi swap. Other than that there is not a lot than you can do to the 3.8 to increase performance. On the upside, you can buy complete builder's kits for doing both of those, and lots of pople have done them.
