A 1980 purple z28 camaro.  Real easy to learn how to drive a standard on that one.  Now I'm on about vehicle #20?

Do you guys have any old pictures of you and your first car? Where you guys all stoked and thought it was the cat's meow when you first got it? Did you guys try waxing over rust spots? I thought my daughter would be happy to get a free car but she looked a little disappointed when I said she could have my Golf. She hates the factory tape deck and missing exterior trim. I was so happy to have my own car. Throw up some stories if you got some of your first car and pictures if you have any.

I actually remember my first car.

It  was a 1976 Ford Granada 2 door.  I paid $50 for it and the thing was probably not even worth that.  It had no business being on the road.

When I bought it had the vinyl roof peeled off and someone had painted it with a brush and some white house paint.  The same genius had put a set of Dodge rims on the rear axle which have the same bolt pattern as a Ford but a smaller centre hub.  They had just got the lug nuts on a few threads and called it good.  Wheel wobbled back and forth and I was lucky it didn't come off on the drive home (about 10 km).   I found a set of huge mags at a pawn shop... lugged them home on the bus and threw them on the back.  They must have been 15" wide and chrome.    I thought I looked pretty bad arse.

It had a 302 with a blown head gasket that I tried to replace on the side of the road with a cheap assed Can Tire socket set (and no torque wrench ... I was young and even dumber than I am now if you can believe it).    It ran, but pressurized the cooling system so bad it would shoot water 6-8 feet out of the radiator if the cap was left off.  The front fenders had holes in them you could stick your fist through and the valve covers leaked so bad it looked like I was on fire if I stopped.

So then in my infinite wisdom I decided the best inaugural voyage for this POS... was to drive it from Vancouver to Kelowna.   You might ask why this seemed like a good idea at the time... well I had no title for it (and therefore no insurance either) and the previous owner lived in Kelowna so I figured I'd just drive it up there and get the registration.   Oh I also didn't have a drivers license at that point either.

I to this day have no idea how I or the car made that trip without dying.   By the time I made it back to Vancouver the oil was foamy and white... the last couple hundred K I had to stop every 1/2 hour or so to fill the radiator with water.  I have no idea how that thing kept running the whole way or why I didn't get pulled over.  Just goes to show you that someone up there is looking out for fools.

I sold the car a few weeks later for $150 or something and thus started my vehicle buying/selling obsession.  I've probably owned well over 100 vehicles since then.  It's a sickness for sure.

I was tired of taking public transportation to get to UBC in the nineties. I told my folks that I was going to get an " affordable economy car" to get myself around in. I found a 1970 Mercury Cougar in Surrey but the owner wanted cash because he didn't trust money orders. I went to the bank and got $6000 in 50 dollar bills and stuffed it into some tube socks and made my way over to pick it up. It was all downhill from there.

There was a bunch of police at his house because one of the tenants downstairs got stabbed in the groin due to some "money issues" The owner of the car had the same name as "Norm" from the show "Cheers"  and when I gave him the money for the car; a wrestling match broke out over the money. His wife was berating him in front of me saying something about "prostitutes" and what not. I sat in the kitchen as the couple wrestled around with a sock full of fifties. I didn't know whether to laugh or vomit(heavy set folks in jogging pants)

The car?1970 Merc Cougar with 351 Clevland(4v), C6 and 9". Burgundy with black vinyl top. I sunk another $4000 into her over a one month time period in performance parts. My folks asked me what car I wound up with. I lied and said I got a Toyota Tercel. I still tell my Mom that my Jeep parts are from the local junkyard and that I don't really spend money on it. 18 years later and I'm still fibbing about what I spent on my vehicles.
