New Driveshaft with jeep wobble
« on: September 27, 2010, 07:36:15 PM »
right, so i have a 2000 Grand Cherokee, the front driveshaft was the CV boot type i went to pats driveline and they built me a new shaft with Joints. i put it in a few hours ago and now when i get over 40 i get a serious vibration.

did i put it in wrong or did their conversion not work?

Check to make sure the cups are seated correctly and everything is nice and snug. Is the shaft installed the right way around? (Do you have the axle end on the t case?) Other than that the shaft may not be balanced correctly. I've heard lots of good about Pat's so let us know how it turns out.

you can't install them backwards........

i had this happen with a DS from pats before.............on my 2000WJ; they rebuilt the cv boot at the tcase end (it was shot) and 1k later the front CV went........  might have to pull it and bring it in again.... or bring the jeep down to them so they can see it..........

i just doubled checked the connection to the diff and t-case and they both seem pretty snug. im going to give pats service a call tomorrow and see if they can take a look at it. then i guess well go from there.

Nope but he said he got a conversion to joints so I figured he's got a 1310 on each end?

the joints part eluded my vision................... didn't see that.

so if you went to ujoints at both ends (i assume you did)  what kind of driveshaft was made? is it a double cardan driveshaft or just a slip yoke with two ujoints? where did you get the yokes for the tcase and diff?  (curious now)

are you running a lift?

theres currently no lift i was planning on a 2inch, its got the slip with a joint on each end.
i figured if i did put it on backwards id flip it around i did so and it started out better than the first way i had it but then the wobble kicked in again. and this time when i got around 50 and hit the gas i could hear a rubbing/grinding noise.
atm i have it wrapped in a tarp i couldn't see any damage on the shaft I'm planning on taking it in on Thursday

i'm no driveline expert, but if it doesn't have a double cardan on it thats probably why its an issue;  you've got to much angle on that front joint..................

tough to say.  if it has no lift and high pinion diff, don't think it would "need" a DC joint.  i have a lift, high pinion and the front shaft is pretty decent for angle.

that said.  i had mine serviced at DSI and when it came back it made my jeep vibrate.  i unlock my hubs and no vibes in 2 hi.  4 hi i get vibes.  remove shaft, lock hubs no vibes.  remove shaft, 4 hi with hubs locked no vibes.  took the shaft back to DSI to test and it came back as OK.

only thing it could be is the slip spline part has a little play.  luckily i have hubs so i don't have to worry about it.

is your jeep All wheel drive? did the original driveshaft look like this?  this is my old WJ............  it was low pinion.  but you can see the angle on the driveshaft at the tcase..... thats the only reason i suggested the double cardan joint idea...........

just my guess though;  i'm sure the guys at the driveline shop will figure it out.........

ya that's the exact driveline+problem i had, my boot ripped off then the i got a mean hum i took it off and found that the hub that connects to the t-case buggered up.

I have an idea before you get too far along...

Remove the driveshaft and go for a drive, it could just be coincidental timing that the vibes appeared as soon as the new shaft went in.

Process of elimination,
