Best thing you can do is go take the AST program at SAIT. Take a student loan if you need to and try to get a job busting tires at the Kal Tire in the Sears parking lot during the evening/weekends. It counts towards your hours and they let you park there for free while in school.

Worked out pretty good for me. Its a well respected course that gives a lot of extra training not found in the regular apprenticeship program.

Just about finishing up my first year in the AST course. Teachers are great. Hopefully I can get a job right after I finish next year.

The some oil field companies are looking for mechanics all years. You may start out as a labourer.
I am At Finning COE in Red Deer and we were just looking for 14 labours. Posting might still be up. You labour for a year or so ( it is a pretty easy job for the most part, sweep floors, empty garbage, refill consumable bins, and basic maintains,  every so often we will grab you to swing hammer for pounding out pins, and for extra set of eyes for putting a engine in.)  and when a first year position comes up you get first crack at it. Labourer pays $20 an hour. We just had 4 labourers move up to first years. and 2 moved over to parts.

Agree with Clay here, i graduated from AST in 2003, you get credit towards your aprentis hours, so basicaly when you graduate your if i remember correctly your a 2nd year apprentice. after that no more shcool. and the course is great especially the shop part, you will rebuild, axles transmissions, engines and do some welding, machining, you will learn some electronics.... and lots more. their shops and equipment is great. you will spend more time in the shop and go through subjects throughly then you would if doing the aprentisship the old fashiond way where you work for a year then go an take a class, then work then class.

Just about finishing up my first year in the AST course. Teachers are great. Hopefully I can get a job right after I finish next year.

does Mr.Paul still teach there? if so does he still wear a silly hat? we use to bug him about the conductor hat he always wears and make train noises everytime he turned around to write something on the board. (chooo chooo.. all aboard)

He sure does, and yes he wears the train conductor hat!  :D He also has his cane that he threatens to bash you on the head if you aren't listening.

Take a student loan and work in  the evenings/weekends. Thats what I did, its only 2 years. Yes it sucks and puts a cramp on your social life but so does being unemployed. Your first year working will pretty much pay for it.
