Hi I just bought a jeep a 94 yj for 500 bucks. And was wondering how much lift I need to fit a set of 36 inch tires

Coil lift on a YJ 

To fit 36s on a YJ you are probably going to need around 4-4.5" of suspension lift, plus I would install 0.5" shackle lift and then 1" body lift.  In addition for good measure I would look at installing TJ flares as well as they open up the wheel wells for more room

i ran 4.5" rubicon express springs/shocks and a 2" body lift.  i also have TJ flares and hacked back the tub in the rear to clear em.  ran 36" iroks with no issues. 

your axles on 36s will not be happy.  i kept eating front end components...... your rear D35 will not be happy either.......

so ya, it is not a big deal to fit them, but your axles will need to be addressed.........  at least, i think so.

i dropped down from the iroks to 35s because i got sick of breaking the D30... rears an 8.8. it holds up ok.

The question is not really "What do I have to do to fit 36's?"

the question is "What do I have to do to run 36's without breaking things all the time..."

OR

perhaps the question is "What size tire can I run within the budget I have..."

sounds like the tires are worth more than the YJ...unless your 33's are holding you back, why bother?

if i paid 500 for a jeep, i would sawzall that thing to fit 36's with minimal lift.

Well not to keen on the sawzzall idea the body is in great shape so a 4" and a 3"

i would not do more than 1" body and if i realllllly had to, 2" most. Definitely not 3".
When i said sawzall, you could flat fender it, cut wheel well openings bigger. Run TJ flares in the rear. You can sawzall/cut and still make it look really good.

they will fit just fine at 4" and 2" bodylift. 
you can hack the rear fenderwell out to clear 36s. in fact you can probalby do it on 5" of lift.  even a 3 1/2" ilft and 1" bodylift (what i wish i had) check out my jeep. you can't even tell i cut anything.

even at that lift hieght of 4" susp and 3" body, you might hit the rear tub at flex.

What about doing an soa. Is it a better op and is it any cheaper

yes and no.

either way you have to add new shocks, so thats an expense for both SOA and SUA.

if you go spring over axle (SOA) you are going to run into axlewrap issues most likely, and definitly will be taxing your driveline angles. even at 4" a tcase drop is necessary! (usually)   also, axlewrap sucks.  you also have to weld the new spring perches in too.  not a biggie, if you're a welder i guess!
doesn't mean its not an option.... but there are plenty of 4" kits out there reasonably priced........
