Voting on Monday
« on: April 29, 2011, 07:08:43 PM »
This in the most important thing you can do in a free democracy.
For me I have not missed an election since I turned eighteen.  However I will not be voting for jack the commy or a non Canadian whose last name translated in English means Iamathief. Or any leader who votes to break up Canada. Okay I,m a closet Quebec sepertist.  ;D.  Just my opinions on the leaders.
So Let's Get Out And Vote Monday

However you affiliation may fall get out and vote.

Failure to do so decries the foundation of democracy.

We need only look overseas to see that the people of Egypt, Yemen, Syria, and Libya are dying for what we take for granted for everyday.

If you do not participate in making policy (you do this by voting) then policy is made for you.  (sounds more like a dictatorship).

We have had a dysfunctional government for far too long in Canada as a result of Minority Government.  It is about time that changed.

Just my slightly biased  ::) opinion.

I like Andy haven't missed an election since I was allowed to vote, I don't consider it a right or a privilege I think it is a responsibility.

Yup...they are all turds. It's the reality of hyper-partisan North American politics. All politicians have on REAL goal...get elected and stay elected. They will pork barrel, mud-sling, slither, wiggle, and whine in order to get into power and stay there.

All you can do is choose the party who's policies are least objectionable.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

What i know.
Even with a minority government, Harper has kept interest rates low.
He has kept our dollar at or better than US.
We are leaps and bounds ahead in the recession versus USA.
Harper is the first RESPECTED leader  by other nations in a LONG time.

Yes politics will always have corruption, but Harpers corrupt government has served Canada well.
i can not imagine NDP or Liberal running (ruining)this country.
The Green Party will be wasted votes unfortunately and would be better served by voting PC to a majority.

Agreed Tom.

Would also be nice to see a majority so our government could govern rather than tip toe through and around the issues that matter.

And remember, by law you get time to go vote.   I've heard 1, 2 and 3 hours so I'm not sure on the exact number.

Disagree.

The unregulated banking system in the US caused the recession mostly due to the derivatives market and the sublending practices in the mortgage sector.

The current CDN minority government is a coalition government formed by the Canadian Alliance Party and the Progressive Conservative Party which joined in 2003 as the Canadian Conservative -Alliance Party, which has now turned back to just the Conservative Party.

I don't want to go on a rant about what the Conservative government's reign has been responsible for, but look at the G20, almost $1B in tax dollars spent for 4 days.  Not a single Canadian was consulted about our involvement in the signing of the North American Union (which no one fully understands what the mandate is), or dropping 66 government funded programs in 2006 to save $1B so they could keep one of the only electoral promises they made by cutting the GST by 2%.

If our provincial Conservative government tells us anything, we cannot trust them, or any other politician for that matter.  Why do we have the highest provincial
GDP's of all the provinces, yet our health care system is one of the worst in Canada?  Oh, and what about our buddy, Ted Morton, I.G. anyone????

The Green Party has one really good platform I agree which applies to voter reform.  They want to abolish the federal funding of political parties.  There is also a request to change to voting system so that every single vote is counted towards the federal party they vote for, instead of going towards the MP in their individual riding.  This I feel would be a huge change to our democratic system, for the better, and would reduce voter apathy and get more people out to the poles.

In fact, the Green Party rated the best amongst any party on reform proposals based on a research pole done by a consumer group Democracy Watch Canada.  Read:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canadavotes2011/story/2011/04/28/cv-election-democracy-grades.html

People are dying in other countries trying to overthrow dictatorships, just for the hope that they one day may be able to live in a society where they might be able to chose their governments.

So, in my limited view of politics, the only wasted vote is the one you don't make.

What i mean by wasted is that a vote for Green may enable the Libs or NDP to close the gap on PC. Green party will have zero effect on politics in Canada. Unless they eventually become powerful (were they even at the leaders debate?), than a vote for them is wasted.
Not in the literal sense but in the bigger picture. Our country has never been more stable than it has been under Harper. All the crap aside, he gets my vote.
