Im still upset that i offered you money to hold that one Johnny and then you sold it to Robin....
I did a Google search for "hot trannies" but nothing came up about oil coolers  :o

Worrying too much about mpg with a Jeep is similar to worrying about your sister's virginity. An ok thing to be concerned about but...

I do need a winch yes!  However, I do realize this winch is a peice, but its worth a try, cuz I think a brand new free winch is better than no winch at all.

You "need" a winch or " want" one ?

Do you do a lot of solo wheeling?
Do you hunt or fish deep in the bush by yourself?

It's easier to get a tug from your fellow Jeepers with a strap than it is to unspool and drag out that cable. Dunno? I've owned 4 winches over the years and I've only ever used them for long and greasy hillclimbs a dozen or so times. Yes, I know it's poor form to
always rely on other people's winches, but ask yourself why you think it's imperative to have 100 plus pounds of weight up front. I've found that a lot of guys buy one because it oozes "true 4x4" to the Offroad layman . A winch was always near the end of my modification list when I was starting new projects. Buy one when funds permit or if you get a smokin deal on one but don't be in too much of a hurry. Lots of Jeepers on runs that are more than willing to yank out a stuck guy...after pointing and laughing that is.

The only time I've used mine is to winch myself up a telephone po..I mean pull myself  out when I got stuck in the back alle...err...  :-X

I think I have 4 or so extra winches in the garage somewhere. Maybe 5. By the time you have money I'll have a couple more I got cheap off of Justin because his woman found out how much he spent on Jeep parts again.

I agree that always relying on other people's winches to get you out is definitely bad form. It's not a big deal for stocker and near-stock runs out at McLean...but when you start getting into more challenging runs, having a winch means that you're more likely to be able to contribute to the group as a whole making it through...as opposed to relying on the group to drag you through. I'd rather see someone spend their mod budget on a good quality 8000 pound winch than on a craptacular spacer lift with cam bolts. Wheel you rig the way it is now, save your disposable income for six months, buy a good quality used winch (or a new one from Jay), and be ready to contribute the group's progress down the trail.

There are definitely runs where you'll be required to have a working winch - and some runs where a working winch is the only thing that will get a near-stock vehicle through. There are obstacles that probably shouldn't be tried if you don't have a working winch - because there is no safe way to get someone into place to pull you out.

While a winch isn't necessarily a "need to have" it's a good insurance policy to have in place - especially for newer drivers in near-stock rigs. That way when you try something and choose the wrong line, you aren't completely reliant on the rest of the group to rescue you.

Good Advise guys! I didn't really consider the weight issue, is there a solution for TJ's where you can remove the winch when DD, such as carriers I have seen for trucks?
My thought process was that it would be a better investment at this point then lockers. Especially, considering I am running on stock TJ axles, and plan on upgrading down the road at which point I will want lockers anyway, so why spend the big bucks twice, when I can spend "middle of the road" money on something that I will have for a while and provide insurance.  Plus, I would like to contribute when I do go wheeling and would like to head out wheeling with buddies who have dirt bikes and quads, therefore needing a winch.

This makes a lot of sense. Unless your name is Waytec, you ain't getting pulled out by a quad.

Just pony up the dough and buy one dude. If ur gonna be wheeling a stock rig for a while (and let's be honest u will be).  People will get sick and tired pretty quickly draggin ur stock jeep out of everywhere.  You want to contribute? Get self sufficient........ Guys don't build their rigs with lockers, winches and 35s to 'help' stockers out......  Just my .02.  Just buy one off Avnine. He's got a 9k for sale.

Ummmm....ya.....you see, Johnny doesn't actually read before he posts. He skims random posts in the thread, and then uses his magic 8 ball to determine what he's going to post. Then he edits his post to make it seems more offensive.  ;)
