Insanely cheap tools at Canadian Tire.
« on: October 23, 2011, 10:21:45 AM »
Canadian Tire is having a 70% off sale and one of the items is a 177-piece socket kit that usually goes for $349.99, its on sale for $99.99 and you get another $10 when you spend more than $50.

Pook has the same set so you can ask him anything about it.

It looks like a good deal HOWEVER....

CT has a habit of pricing things at a higher price for just the minimum amount of time required by law and then putting it on sale at a more reasonable price....gullible people go crazy when they hear of the deep discounts but the discounted price is the "real" price. Sears does the exact same thing and both companies have gotten some heat for it legally.

I talk to clients regularly who want my advice on buying treadmills. "should I buy the such and such at store a for $599? it's half price!!!" they ask... then I explain that no one is going to sell a $1200 product for $600....The sale price is a good deal but the regular price is just an inflated fantasy.

I would say that socket set is probably a good deal, as are most of the sale items at places like CT and Sears.  Just don't let the percent off influence your desision too much as it is just something someone in marketing made up.

Anyone can say anything is the "regular price"...the question is, does anyone actually buy it at that price.

no they wait for these sales and buy them on sale.

that is, the guys the realize a good deal and jump on it.  others will ponder your question, debate whether this sale is worth it, then miss out completely.  hopefully those same people are kind enough to ask YOU if they can borrow your tools instead of buying their own.............

these will likely be gone by now anyways.

CT is great for rainchecks, if they are out of stock they will give you one so you can get the deal when they do have stock..

So Fraser says that it's a good deal, and then you post three paragraphs about Cambodian Tire's pricing strategy and say that it's a good deal. So far the total relevant contribution that you've made to this thread is "I would say that socket set is probably a good deal."

Thank you for confirming that you agree with something that was already posted.  :)

I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

my point is that the "regular" price has no bearing on whether or not it is a good deal. It is the price you actually pay that matters.

Canadian tire also has huge buying power when it comes down to it!  This means they negotiate big discounts on the cost of an item with suppliers/manufacturers because they buy so many more units then the next guy (auto value/rona/home depot/etc) and can sell the product way faster as well.  Not to mention that Canadian Tire is the top known "Brand" name in Canada, meaning more people regonize the name and what it stands for then any other retailer and what Brand wouldn/t want to get on board with that kind of pull.  Futhermore, Canadian tire runs a very tight turn (sales-to-inventory ratio) and if they can not liquidate old product they seek out discounts form the vendor indicating they will not be able to buy as much of "Next Years Tools" becuase they have to many of "This Years Tools" in stock.  No brand wants this, as it will destroy their margin, and upcoming fiscal season.  Finally, Canadian tire would be foolish to increase the market cost of any product as this would affect their bottom line until the time that they are able to mark down said product.  This would jeoprodize their ability to purchase "in-season" goods that are out performing projected sales targets, therefore being reactionary to the market.
Bottom Line, I wish I had $100 to go an buy that set!!!

find it,

its easier than borrowing other peoples tools.

if you've got money for lifts and axles and tires and winch plates then you can find 100$ to buy some tools to install those parts. that is, unless you just want to stare at them in your garage..........

I didn't know Canada post did this but their comparison shopper thing is really cool!

I bought it.  It is not as good as my signet set, but it was half the price and included a 1/2" drive set too.  At the end of the day, it's still good bang for your buck.  $350 for that set would be a ripoff in my honest opinion.
