CEL Code P0440
« on: June 10, 2012, 09:18:31 PM »
Ok so my CEL came on and I got the dreaded P0440 code on my OBD code reader as well as the Key on off on off on off dash reader. I checked my hoses and everything seemed ok. under the rig.(stock 2007 sahara with 109000 kms.) Thr filler tube at the top of the gas tank clamp was slightly loose and I tightened the clamp a bit. Cleared the code and I thought I was good to go. Not it came back. I checked everything again Cleared the code. It came back again. I called a repair shop and got in an argument with the service guy when I told him it was an evap code that was showing, He wouldn't accept the scanner code nor the vehicle code with the key thing. He said his tech would have to check it and it would cost $100.00 to get the code. I gave up on him. I called one of the Chrysler Dealerships here and got into another argument with the dumb arse service who didn't even know the jeep had a built in code reader with the key thing. He said it would cost $100.00 to get the code from his techs.I asked him if I should just bring him the cash and bend over. What a dipschit. I took my dogs to the groomer today and had some time to kill so I went to another Chrysler dealer and spoke with the service manager there. He told me it probably was a faulty gascap that wasn't sealing properly. I picked up a new gas cap from the dealer and put it on, cleared the code and went to work. I used the remote start to start the jeep to warm it up as it was pouring rain and 8 degrees out .Went out to a nice warm vehicle proudly showing a lovely orange CEL again. Anyone have any suggestions what to check next as I have an 11,000 km drive coming up in 3 weeks. (driving across country and back to see an ailing parent. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Piece of elec tape. Prob cheapest thing.  ;D
Isn't p0440 A minor evap loss??  I have had that code on my Kia for a year. It shouldnt effect anything, I believe youre just losing a small amount of fuel vapors to the atmosphere.  Really the only way I know to find minor evap loss is with a smoke machine.

check for the solenoid working that allows the engine to suck from the canister, and also check to see that the canister isn't spoiled.  like maybe it sucked some water or has a crack in it.  Hoses are pretty good on their own, i wouldn't start chasing them just yet.

You should count yourself lucky! In Fort Mac the Ford Dealer charges $500 just for a diesel truck to grace its shop.

The dealer's scanner give the tech WAY more info than just the code, also you didn't really expect a service writer to be able to diagnose your vehicle over the phone based on a single piece of info did you?  I guess one did actually, see how far that got you? Service writer's are NOT mechanics.

You have a few choices,

live with it, black tape can help.

randomly replace parts hoping that fixes it.

pick up a service manual and learn the system front to back and go thru it till you find the problem.

pay someone to fix it. Pretty much anywhere you go is going to cost atleast $100 by the time its all done. Places like Chanda and Broken Axle or any other independent mechanic have cheaper hourly rates than the dealers.

evap codes can be tough to find, skip the groomer, pay the mechanic.

You cant expect a service writer to know everything about your jeep.

Also the code readers that a mechanic uses are different from the one you use. Although I agree that it sucks to pay $100 to get it checked it could have saved you the price of a gas cap. The mechanic would be able to see what the trouble is without having to replace random parts hoping this will work.

Clear the code and put some elec. tape over it if it bothers you. The only damage it will do is to your fuel economy.

Sorry but i have to ask, do you tip your groomer?

As a mechanic who's suppossed to know everything about every make and model,(and fix it for free)  i haven't had a tip in years...

as for black tape, one warning light for ALL engine systems, be a proud Jeep owner, and fix it properly.

3 Weeks for a my 14 yr old son and I to spend quality time together. We are going to say goodbye to my Dad who is in hospital in NS and doubt he will make it out. Time spent driving the Jeep will make it easier to wrap our minds around it.  I've made this trip before both flying and driving. By the time we pay for flights and car rental it will work out cheaper in the end to drive.

If it's just the evap code, it'll be okay to drive.

Last trip was through the US. His beginners is not  valid in the US so prob more through Canada. He's pretty excited about the trip but a bit saddened about grandpas condition. Will be a nice journey though. Last time it was in a Versa, but the jeep will be more fun I think.

I gave in and booked the Sahara into Autopro in Mayland Heights for this morning. Took it in and told them what was happening and left it. I picked up my rig after they called me and told me it was fixed. $200.00 later I was told it was the ESID and they didn't replace it just cleaned it and freed a sticking valve. Seems to be ok so far. My super expensive $3000.00 Warranty refused to pay for the diagnostics and repair. I even paid for extra coverage for this extra electronics, extra front end coverage and was told I wad covered bumper to bumper. I guess the evap is not mounted on the bumper so it wasn't covered. I hope this is the end of this issue.  >:(

And if you had of paid the $100 diagnostic fee to begin with, you would have had it all fixed for free. Yet, you choose to spend an extra $100 and bought a gas cap to boot. :D

Have a fun trip! 8)
