Help bad vibration and noise while accelerating
« on: July 22, 2013, 05:41:52 PM »
Hey guy I'm not much of a mechanic but just today my jeep started out having a strange sound under acceleration, then progressed into a bad vibration under acceleration. Any ideas as to what's wrong?

Oh man. Soo many possibilities. Ds u joints, tcase issues, your not lifted so there goes the thought of angles. Ball joints, wheel bearings. Basically loose front end. Is vibe in back or in steering wheel?

I would start with the u-joints and go from there.  Do you know if the joints have been changed?

I'm going to go ahead and say no they haven't been, I found today that the vibration happens between 55-85 km/h and doesn't go away when in neutral leading me to believe that it is u joints what is the cost of replacing them?

Spicer joints are $20-30 a piece and then a hour or 2 of your time.  If you do it yourself, make sure you have a coffee cup with rags in it ready to put over the slip yoke housing of your t-case or you will spill oil.

Don't cheap out and get good joints.  If you are not diligent in keeping greaseable u-joints greased there is nothing wrong with the non-greaseables.  Spicer has a 3 seal joint that is good

Ok got under the jeep and the shaft seems to have no play at all. I don't think it's u joints anymore any other thoughts.

Remove your rear shaft and drive in 4wd, your vibration will likely be gone. you really have to remove the shaft to check the joints anyways

The puppy you hit that got tangled on your drive shaft must have come loose.
