So if you had to buy a truck....
« on: May 01, 2014, 09:41:38 PM »
Going to be buying a truck this year, it will be a dodge.  What I cant decide on is the new 1500 ram diesel or a 2500 diesel.  My trailer I  will be towing is only 4300 dry, and wet 5000 lb max.  I know a 1/2 ton will tow this as all last summer my wk 4.7 did the trick.  The problem with the wk was the short and narrow wb.  I found it did tow it, but doing 100km /hr was not an economical option, and the trailer and the jeep fought each other on who got to stay in the grooves in the road.

I want to be able to pull this thing at 110km/hr (condition dependant of course).  Chevy and ford are not options, my neighbour has a ford 350 and each time it starts in the winter it sounds like a war is going on under the hood, and after driving Chevy work trucks for the past 15 years i will be very happy to never drive one again.

Again, I know I dont need a 2500, but with only 700 lb capacity in the trailer including 250 lbs of water, it leaves me with 450-500 lbs left over.  And when I do get some time, my thought was to build a new frame for my trailer with 5000 lb axles so I can put larger tanks and have more storage.

The 1500 is a new (to canada) motor, that scares me (friends with 3.0 wk's have some costly repairs), the 6.7 isn't my ideal choice, but at least it wouldnt know the trailer is there.  And in the meantime, I can load a 1/4 cord of wood in it and head out.

Whats your thoughts?

Whats your thoughts?

Get a smaller trailer. It'll be hard to get your condo on wheels into the good spots.  ::) 8) ;)
if we were smart with our money we wouldn't own Jeeps.

well i have an 09 f150 5.4 v8 tow rating apparently of 11,200lbs my travle trailer i tow is 5600lbs dry and iv hauled with water and everything from cgy to Minneapolis no issues whatsoever! the 1500 ram diesel i think will be pretty dissapointing for towing honestly but my 2 cents is 2500 diesel.... im a ford guy but i understand people have their preferences.... id be honetly looking at a chev 2500hd diesel as well but im not quite ready for a new truck, another few years.... good luck with whatever you choose

ram 1500s have coils in the back are crap. put any load on them and they sway and pull and grab. decent power thats about it. really like a car.  it'll feel like your WK.

if you're hellbent on dodge then it has to be 3/4'. which is to bad, because the chev and ford half tons will suffice for your purposes.

i was looking at Dodge cause of price and bypassed it specifically for this reason. everyone i asked told me to steer clear of the 1500. 2500 if dodge or 2500 ford/chev.

got the 1500 GMC, and thye still call me a pussy for not getting a 3/4 lol

Sway will not be an issue.  The Reese straight line hitch I have is awesome.  The trailer cannot turn independently of the vehicle, the vehicle has to initiate the turn.  But yeah I'm not crazy about rear coils.

The ecoboost would be on my radar, it apparently tows good, but the fuel economy isn't much different then the triton (so I'm told)

If you're going to spend the money for a diesel, get a 3/4 ton. Not enough truck paired with too much trailer is no fun.
I followed a rainbow out to a garage and found a leprichaun. The rainbow ended in a potted cactus on his porch, but there was no gold :(

three words

Cummins
3/4 ton
Dodge

I would go minimum 3/4 ton. I'm not a fan of ford as the cab needs to be removed for some of the maintenance work on the engine, don't know much about chev/GMC = Government Made Crap. Dodge with Cummins =  easy access to whole engine for maintenance and Cummins diesel kicks arse even ford guys are swapping Cummins into to their f350's. (Ive looked into it for my 95 F350)

3/4ton Dodge Cummins no question.  The Cummins is tried and true(same basic design since it was first offered in 1989) with lots of aftermarket support and used parts available. The new diesel 1/2ton is new and unknown.

As a Journeyman HD mechanic I work on lots of different diesels. I drive/own a Dodge Cummins. Its WAY simpler and easier to work and is a HD duty engine made from well established company that knows industrial diesels. If Dodge stopped offering the Cummins then I'd drive still drive a Cummins in whatever wrapper it came in.

Only towing 5k? get a half ton diesel dodge and enjoy driving the truck when not hauling a trailer. my 2 cents HD trucks are fun, but driving them everywhere gets tiresome quick.

The mileage rating on the new 1/2 diesel version is very very good, much better than the 6.7!!

My 3/4ton 4 door short box turns sharper and is easier to park than the wife's Durango. I enjoy driving it a lot, more power than either the Durango or my 5.9ZJ, although it is chipped.  Ride is a lot more firm though, not teeth jarring.

3/4 ton
Ride will be worse, fuel mileage will be worse and it won't be as maneuverable. Fact is you don't need that much truck...unless you want to have fun which by all means go ahead! You might really love it. All preference...

1/2 ton
It is a new motor...I think its already in the Grand Cherokees and gets rave reviews
