Need some lift advice for my XJ
« on: October 13, 2006, 12:47:35 PM »
Hey guys new to the forum and looking for some advice.
I recently bought a '91 XJ 4.0 and want/need to put new suspension in. The arse end has the notorious sag.

Ive been looking around at a few lift kits, Im thinking of going 3-4" of lift nothing major as this will be my first lifted truck and I dont want to have to do too many drivetrain mods after install. Hoping to run at least 31's.

Can anyone suggest a good lift kit around 3"-4" for under $1000?

Ive been looking at an RE lift of 3.5" but its a little too expensive..$1220. I am going to need full leaf packs no AAL and new shocks all around.

the RE kit is worth the $... love mine... lil stiff to start, but hit enough bumps hard enough and she's beautie.

have had it on for almost a year and no visible sagging at all.

g'luck

Locally there is Modern Motors and National 4wd.  North Shore is out of Vancouver and they do have very good prices.  I like National but Modern has also been good to me.

$418
comes with:
• 2 - 3" Front Coil Springs
• 2 - 3" Rear Leaf Packs
• Rear Brake Line Extension
• 4 - Rusty's Hydraulic Shocks
• Complete Instruction

Well still deciding on what lift Im going to get, either a ProComp 3" w/ leaf packs $850 shipped, rusty's 3" or 4.5", or Skyjacker 3" for about $1000.

Anyone have bad(or good) things to say about these companies?

Frenchy, excellent S10 link/writeup (great pictures) and all the posts and other links in there. The Dakota link doesn't work for me though.

Ya thanks for those links. The thing with those is my leaf's are totally flat, so I need to get new packs and it looks like all those s10 etc swaps are just adding leafs to the XJ pack....

Yes you're adding the leafs to yours....but JUST the XJ top leaf. Throw the rest away. I did this swap for my 87 XJ which had FLAT leafs. I used a set of leafs from a 91 4x4 Dakota at Pick-N-Pull in Calgary. Added them to my XJ's main leaf and got a good 4.5-5" out of it. I did it so I could take my 2" blocks out. Sits level with the front which has 3" coils and 2" spacers.

Looks like I have to remove my hitch to get the rear leaf bolts out....anyone else experience this and have a better solution?

you could just cut the bolts( off on the side towards the hitch ) with a sawzall and put new ones in, that is what i did on 88 xj... the hitch was rusted to the frame like it was welded.
