You can count me in...I like the idea of teaching us "fresh tug meat" some off roading techniques at the gravel pit before hitting the trail.

Yeah Ian is not just another pretty face  :D

OK I am definately in. The only thing is, I dont have a CB. So can I borrow one of yours TJ54?

As for tow points, where can I pick up some for my '94 ZJ? Where should I put them? For the rear, I have a hitch.

Thanks

I believe http://jeepstuff.8m.com/ is still open for appointment purchases???

If so, that's where I would go looking for tow hooks/brackets.

Yes, you can borrow a FRS radio
No, I don't have extra CB's

I am assuming when you say when you have a hitch, you are not thinking of using a trailer ball

I will hopefully be there, if I can get the leaky transfer case fixed.  Getting tow points was my major job needing to be done, but now that I have fluid leaking out, tow points or not there's no way she can go on the trail like that.

If I am there, I will probably be able to spot someone a CB for the day, as I managed to get a base station CB up and running on the August 19th run. Hopefully someone needing it would be all ready to have the wires run to a hot fuse or similar set up, so we're not sitting trying to fish things through the firewall (Buki can wrench my tow hooks on in the parking lot while we're doing that - he has experience already ).

If I do come down from Sylvan, I'd like to get a membership if possible.  If there is anything ahead of time with that needing attention, let me know and I will make sure all the ducks are in a row. :)

Well I found some tow points at Princess Auto, they are shackles and hooks for $13. I was going to try and hook them up to the hitch somehow. I also found some Nylon Recovery Straps 2"x30' (18k lbs) for $50.

I would hazard a guess to say that every single time a "run" thread comes up, that tow points and CB's and all their quirks arise in the thread from the newbie side.

Can I make a suggestion?  Could we have an article written by someone knowledgeable (without pics is fine in the beginning) on the finer points of installing CB's and tow points made into a sticky at the top of the page?

That way, at least all you are doing is copying a link, stating for them (i.e. ME) to read it, and then come back with questions.

Thoughts?

If your hitch has a ball/mount that is removable and held in place with a pin and safety clip, you already have a great tow point.  Remove the ball/mount, slip the loop of your tow strap into the receiver, slide the pin through the loop and add the safety clip.  This works great, I used this method for a year before I bought the Warn shackle attachment that fits into the receiver.

Under the right conditions, wouldn't this produce a projectile?

Under the right conditions, anything could be a projectile.  I have seen it done, and you need to make sure you have a GOOD pin.  However, for the price you can pick up a receiver with a shackle or hook for a decent price.
