87 comanche tranny overheat?
« on: January 11, 2008, 07:36:07 PM »
I recently purchased a 87 jeep comanche(4.0L 2wd aoutmatic) as a daily driver.  I have been haveing transmission problems though.  When cold the transmission engages and works fine but after about 20-25 minutes of driving it goes out of gear.  It wont go back into gear unless i pull over and put it in park.  If i wait about 5 minutes with it idleing when i put it back in gear it drives again for about another 20 minutes(less if on highways).  I checked the transmission fluid and it never spells burnt nor does it look discoloured.  I heard that its common in 4wd models that the tranny cooler lines going over the front differential will get pinched and therefor cause a similar problem and all it needs is some new lines but i was wondering if that applied to 2wd models as well? (although i checked both lines coming off the transmission and followed them all the way to the rad and there seems to be no obstructions).  Is this problem just overheating? or should i look to rebuild/find a new tranny?

you could disconect a trany line and direct both disconected end into a bucket and check for flow. id also try adding a tranny cooler and just disconect the stock tranny cooler that may be blocked. but a flow check will show this.

Never heard of the lines getting pinched. Are you sure that the fluid is all the way up? The idea of pulling off the lines and checking them is a good idea but only pull off the outgoing line on the cooler, you want to make sure you have good flow thru the cooler. Whats your engine temp doing? If the tranny temp is really high then it will force up the engine temps as well. I don't think its overheating though, to overheat enough to stop the tranny is would usually boil over or it would smell burnt.

Wanna make it a 4x4? I think I have everything you need to convert, tranny, t-case, driveshafts, front diff......

try changing the filter and fluid . Drop the tranny pan and check out the magnet to see how much "soot" has attached itself to the magnet. Try the simple stuff first. eliminate a plugged filter

Two years ago I parted out an MJ, last week I parted out my XJ so I've got lots of stuff, everything I'm sure to convert to 4wd. If you want to get really stupid I have everything to convert it to 4wd and put it on an 8" lift with long arms.... :P
